Haven't posted on here for a while as been rather busy lately, but have a question to ask.
Our 2year old gelding was castrated around this time last year which healed up nicely with no infections.
Last week however, his sheath was very swollen, as well as the area where his testicles would have been if he was not castrated. Vet said to clean and if it did not get any better they would come out to have a look. Anyway, vet came out on Friday 5th and gave it a thorough clean. Said it was an infection and gave him some antibiotics and inflammation medication to reduce the swelling. Swelling went right down as he finished the antibiotics on the following Wednesday.
With the swelling being reduced completely, we noticed that on one side where his testicles would have been it was slightly swollen and scabby. Thinking that it may have just been a soar where his rug may have caught, or where he was so swollen previously it may have been rubbing him, we simply just cleaned it and put some sudocream on daily. To begin with, the scabs appeared to be healing and the swelling also reduced, until yesterday morning, when we noticed it was swollen again and looked like abscess. During the day it increased in size and looked as though it was about to burst. We had discussed we would call vet out this morning.
When the vet arrived this morning it had already burst and looked very gunky and soar. The vet said that it was what had most likely caused the previous swelling of the sheath. She drained the remaining pus out, and said it was an abscess. She stated that it was a very unfamiliar place for an abscess to occur, and could have been an effect of his castration but due to it being so long ago, it was very unlikely. She is coming back out next week to give it a check over, however, if it does not heal up, she will need to scan it to try and figure out what is causing it, so fingers crossed it all heals up nicely for our lil man.
Has anyone else previously had similar or the same experience as this?
