My tb mare was lame for 9 days before her abscess popped out at the coronet band 4 days ago. I soaked it in hot water and have been washing it in hibiscrub and hydrogen peroxide since. She is a lot better and the abscess has closed up, she is still slightly lame and sensitive when I pick her foot out. Does this mean there's still more to come out? What should I do next? And how long before I can have a shoe put back on?

My old ex racehorse did exactly the same a month ago - hopping lame farrier had two goes at finding the abscess as he had a thumping pulse but we had dug as close as the farrier dared close to his pedal bone - we hot tubbed and poulticed to encourage it to come out but after 8 days it came out of his coronet band. He was much more comfortable once the pressure was released but if yours is still sore you ought to get it opened up by the farrier thro the sole it drains so much better downwards! Or you could dry poultice the coronet band but you need to make sure all the infection is out.

It's very very common for abscesses to erupt through the coronet band. You need to try to keep it open at that exit point. Load an empty syringe (minus needle obviously) with warm Hibiscrub water, insert the tip into the top of the hole (be brave!) and squirt it down deep into the hole in the coronet band. Do it several times and at least daily until your're happy that the horse is sound again.

Our pony had an abcess which came out through the coronary band after about a week. We then dry poulticed for a few more days just to make sure there was no more to come and blow me if it didn't then come out round the frog afer 4 days! It had also underrun the sole of her foot. She was noticebly sounder after this, although a bit footsore from when the farrier had tried his best to find it.

I would get your farrier out to double check it for you - they are the experts when it comes to feet (and a lot cheaper tan a vet visit).

sounds like there's more to come out if she's still sore.

There is nothing abnormal about an abcess where the horse is still a little sore after 4 days Whisky, so don't panic.

But Box of Frogs is right, you should keep the hole open, it heals from the bottom up. If the top closes first, then it will break open again as the anaerobic bacteria can breed again (they're shy, they don't like having sex where there is oxygen around :D )

Ones that burst at the corenory band are a bgger to heal. Because they can't drain by gravity they take so much longer.

Being sore really isn't unusual and she'll be on/off lame until its fully healed. As others have said, keep the hole as open as possible. Also allow her to walk about as much as possible as movement will help it drain. If she's really sore then some painkillers will help (but antibiotics will only make it worse!)

Do get the farrier out again too as he may potentially be able to put a lower drainage hole in if it really won't drain properly. Most likely though he'll just take a look and tell you to keep it clean and open.

I've honestly never found this to be the case. I would far rather have a hole in the coronet made by the horse itself than a hole in the sole dug by a farrier, and still less a hole made by a vet, as they often seem very knife happy! I think the secret is to keep pumping something aerobic into the hole, because the bugs don't like to breed if you bathe them in oxygen. I favour hydrogen peroxide at 3% dilution myself.
