Hi

One of my mini shetlands has an abscess in her frog, the farriers located it and I've been poulticing it so hopefully after a few more days she will come right.

I haven't experienced an abscess in a frog before until now. Has anyone else had to deal with this? has anyone had any complications/difficulties with it?

Yup - just the once and it was grim. Pus just kept coming and we thought the mare was fine after a week then spotted she looked just a little off so slapped a hot poultice on. The gunk and smell the next day was horrendous. The owner had an X ray and there was nothing on it so we wondered if she'd had a blackthorn stuck in it .

Took a while and the poor mare was very sore but once it finally cleared she was back to normal.

Yes, I had a horse with chronic abscessing in a hind frog. Well, both frogs, but one was much worse.

Couldn't get to the bottom of it, despite two surgeries. With hindsight I think it was related to having fractured his pelvis as a 2yr old in racing. So how he loaded affected the healing/reoccurrence.

He ended up with big access tracts from middle of the frog popping out at the top of his heel bulb.

So that is a very worse case scenario. Three vet practices, numerous vets & farriers, vet hospital and specialist surgeons had never seen anything like it. So odds of your horse having similar are slim I'd reckon.

Hope you have a speedy recovery

I’ve just found one coming out of the heel bulb. Vet has been. Poultice and carry on as normal.
