Hey

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this. The TB we have on loan has been taken into vets and scanned and they have found a massive abscess inside his hind leg. Vet said he'd never seen anything quite like it. He's staying in vets for a couple of days being given IV antibiotics etc and having it drained.

What I want to know is what are recovery rates/chances and if anyone has come across any associated probs with tendons etc? The abscess blocked the view of tendons so vet couldn't say if they were ok or not. We still have no idea what happened - all we can think of is that the pony kicked him as he is unshod and there is no damage to leg. There's no thorns or anything in the field either.

Abcesses in the thigh muscle of horses are not all that rare. I once read of one which happened to burst while the vet was there, and at least one 2gallon bucket was completely filled with pus as it drained - ooohhh yuk! I see no reason why the horse shouldn't make a full recovery once the infection is gone.
