Recent hind lameness has turned out to be an abscess that has burst through coronet band.
Have poulticed until nothing more coming out, although there hasn't been much puss at all. Horse now completely sound, im allowing the would to dry up and horse is now back living out. My question is, am I ok to ride now?? Horse has only just gone back out today, but he's a menace when not in work! There is an approx. 1 inch slit at the top of the coronet band that is nice and soft at the moment due to poulticing. Should I allow it to dry out and harden up a bit before riding?
I feel like such a novice, but in 18 years ive never had to deal with an abscess!

Ride. Don't let the wound close, squirt it full of wound lotion or hydrogen peroxide every day, with as much pressure as you can get into it. The bugs just love being where there is no oxygen, so peroxide is great for this.

When an abscess bursts at the coronet, it breaks at the top of the hoof wall, below the layer of cells which create more hoof wall. You will see a bit of horn begin to grow down from the top of the split and then it's safe to leave it be. Eventually, the split will fall of the bottom of the hoof.
