I have not often had to deal with this condition but always have Animal Lintex in my first aid kit, as I know from experience that it is not always easy to get in France.

Vet came this morning, did not seem to know what Lintex is (specialist equine practice) told me to use Linseed grains mixed with water, so I had to chase around to find some.

Question? Is Linseed better than Animal Lintex for a deep abscess?

Hmm never heard of that! Heard of the sugar and iodine paste technique, or using Epsom salts?

I've just successfully used Animalintex on a very deep abscess on my baby horse. Week last Wednesday rode and she gave a stride or so that didn't feel quite right. Thursday, lame in trot but nothing obvious anywhere sound in walk, got a small reaction to hoof so figured hot tubbing and poulticing couldn't hurt. Totally non weight baring by Saturday so asked the vet to attend (had just been speaking on the phone to them previously), had a small dig about but couldn't find anything as her feet are so hard and abscess must have been very deep. Abscess finally blew yesterday in her toe, after hot poulticing twice daily since last Thursday (or three times depending on how often baby horse chewed her poultice off :o).

So for me Animalintex is a winner :), as both me and the vet weren't convinced in would come down but might blow out through the coronet band, due to just how hard her feet are.

Thanks Alex, that is what I thought. Our girl was footy at the weekend, and had pulses, always on my guard for laminitis as she is a good doer, lame Monday so brought in, vet contacted and he has now x-rayed and confirmed a deep abscess. I will go with Lintex when I change the dressing.

Funny how you've done it the opposite way round to me :D, if we had no abscess by Thursday night we were going down the nerve block/ x-ray route, though I guess we don't have the history of laminitis!

The linseed kind of sounds like a home remedy to me, but interested to see if anyone else has heard of it and had success with it.

I don't think they really do poulticing as "we" know it Rollin. There have been two tricky abscesses on my yard over the past couple of years, and both of them have been wrapped in gamgee and had betadine poured into them which all seemed a bit strange to me.

I've now found the Animalintex both in Switzerland and in France, but it costs a fortune... I picked some up the last time I was in the UK as a "just in case" measure!

Casey, I buy quite a few things from the UK but wait till I have a list for postage reasons. This includes vet wrap, kill itch, horseman's one step, magnesium, DEET fly spray, tech wash for rugs etc. As you say many things you need are very expensive in France if you can find them. I cannot believe the things they don't carry in the boot like no spare or even any vet wrap!!
