Well he’s come much more sound then yesterday an exit hole appeared at his heel bulb. I’ve put putty in the hoof holes but I’ve been keeping him in a hoof boot which I think will rub on the abscess hole on the heel bulb. What to do?

Thank you. I’ve re poulticed new hole and plugged old ones and applied tape. Wonder if it will still be on after tonight’s rain? I’m so fed up of poulticing. Five weeks and counting.

I'm also dealing with an abscess which first erupted at the coronet band, then the frog a few days later. I'm trying to apply the annimalintex so that it covers both holes and prevents rubbing, then duct tape and Shires hoof boot over the top of the lot. You have my sympathies, it's hard when there's multiple exit sites!

Not going to help now but for future reference, that is why I get a hoof professional to dig out an exit route as soon as I suspect an abscess. Pus trying to find its own way out will go all over the place and has been known to do damage on the way

Have you had a Cushing test? If so, I would retest now and do a TRH Stim test. If not I would have one done asap.

My Draft mare had an ongoing/recurrent abscess, with vet and farrier involved, farrier was convinced it was environmental because of the wet weather that year, vet was issuing dire warnings about things going on within the foot. It only cleared up properly when she started on Prascend

He’s poultice free at last. Tried the feed bag over the poultice last night and he’d just worn through the toe when I took it off. Hoof putty in place. Everything crossed the udder cream on his heel will keep that comfortable. I think he’ll enjoy a night without a special foot if nothing else!

The ones that come out through the heel are always extra sore in my experience - Xmas 2 years ago where she tried to kill me!! I used to find the feed bag chewed through and dumped in the stable in disgust.

Anyway, glad it's popped and hoping yiure finally clear of pus now.
