My thoroughbred has become lame with an abscess on his sole of his hoof which is still to come down. have bein using a poultice but wondering beter ways to make him more comfortable?? as he is limping bad but has had painkillers
Ouch... ime movement actually helps the abscess along more quickly.
The problem with opening the abscess to drain it is you are left with an open wound which when I had one drained years ago took blooming ages to grow out!! So it's keeping it clean, stopping dirt getting in for weeks and weeks! With a high risk of it getting infected again.
You need to get your farrier out to open up the abscess so that it can drain. There is absolutely no need to keep the hole plugged etc once the infection is gone.
Antibiotics are not always needed and certainly will not help before it is already draining.
Have same problem with my colour cob. Vet has cut a small hole near toe to drain pus, have politced for five days and he is now off pain killers. Vet said get shoe put back on asap but although almost sound feel he's still a bit sore for that. Any advice about what to plug or cover hole with. Using a antispectic grease at moment.
Agreed if the infection has travelled then antibiotics may be necessary. However, if the abscess is still in the foot, the best way of dealing with it is to ask your farrier to release it and let it drain.
If you need to plug the hole (not always necessary) they cotton wool with iodine or genitian spray will help, providing all the "gunk" has drained. If not poultice until all has been drawn out.
