Poor little Alfie has come in today with 3 legs... Rang the farrier who is a top guy, he's coming tomorrow but he suspects it's an abscess!

Never had to deal with an abscess before! Poor Alfie :( he's staying in all day tomorrow (he hates staying in in the day with a passion)

Finger crossed nothing more

you are not the only one having a nightmare with abscesses, although I poultice then put the corner of a feed bag over the hoof, then a nappy and welly (davis) boot and turnout 24/7.

They are awful things :(

Oh no that sounds awfull :( I just hope that it's nothing worse :( he's a right soft git is Alfie, but looking at him today he could hardly walk :'(

I feel your pain, although I was kind of hoping for an abscess this morning when mine came out of the stable on 3 legs. Sadly his is a ligament or tendon. Good luck getting it sorted.

No heat, but when I pressed on the sole he flinched :(

Lots of kisses for Alfie tomorrow :)

Also... Got to tell work I'll be finishing early tomorrow!! Hope they don't mind

Thanks guys :) I will do, farriers coming up as soon as he can, he is really such a good chap... Old farrier couldn't even get hold of for weeks!!

Poultice the life oout of the abscess! Once sound and poultice clean have the farrier plug th ehole with Stockholm Tar and cottonwool and then fit a leather pad between the sole and shoe.

Here is a cheap poultice boot that puts up with quite a lot of wear and tear in the paddock

I use inner tubes for soaking for thrush and white line infection (don't leave them on) but mine aren't as fancy as yours with laces Tnavas :D.
I have wondered about the rubber being 'safe' though.

I've used them for years and they have been awesome - very hard to get things like a poultice boot in NZ and the inner tubes are generally free! They've only ever had air and some talcum powder inside them.

I've had them on for several days at a time before with no illeffects but i do bandage down as low as possible so that there is no chafing.

Hi all :)

Went up today... Guess what... Not as lame as yesterday! Farrier came up and checked him over, no abscess (we he said you can never give a definate no to an abscess) then starts looking thinks he could have pulled a muscle.

Vet was up at the yard (she keeps her horse at the yard but is on full livery so never up, today my christmas's came at once)

She checked him out and thought there was a slight inflammation in the Pastern (something along those lines) and 3 days box rest and then trot him up again after that :)

Nothing serious they both said! Great news.
