i need help my mare was badly lame last week (tuesday) we called the vet and she has a absess in her hoof its been goin so well and the last few days nothing much has been coming out on the pultus and the vet said put her out so we had been for while then yesturday she started cantering around and made herself lame like she was last week, we noticed inside her hoof it was like blue/ grey patches would that be bruising on the sole as she has no shoes would that make her badly lame again or should i call the vet back (she did have bandage on for protection)

Amazing how the can go lame with stuff going on in the foot! Had problems with my girl's feet last year a lot - abscesses and bruising. Maybe yours has a bruised sole AS WELL AS the abscess as no shoes. Mine went very very footsore when we moved to new area which is very stoney and I used to have her unshod too we now have 2 front shoes on which has helped her a lot... With horse going badly lame I think I would get vet out again to double check... or ask the farrier if they are around

thanks for your reply we gave her a couple of bute and box rest hopefully she might not be as lame in the morning but the farrier is due coming down on friday should i wait till then or call the vet tomorrow could it be an abscess re-ocurring

My TB has just had an abscess in a hind hoof and there was bruising around his heel. He is also unshod in his hinds but the bruising wasn't really connected to that, more to do with the swelling caused by the abscess. My vet said that after the abscess cleared up, it was not unusual for it to flare up again around where there was bruising and if it happens, go back to pouliticing twice a day.

I guess if you're really worried, call the vet as she's your horse and you'll know best. Hope she's better soon.

thanks for the advise she seems alot better tonight as the vet came down today and dug further in and found more liquid and drained it, she was worried as it was near the pedal bone. if its doesnt heal she'll have to go to surgery so hopefully she'll get better.
