Absess question

How long until absess heals? A hole was dug out by farrier and then wet poulticed for 3 days, then dry poulticed until it stopped draining as was told to by vet. But absess hasnt burst? Do they always burst? It definitely drained but still smells a bit. Pony is now in stable without poultice. Have I done everything okay? Just first horse worries!

With the 2 abscesses I have dealt with, usually around a week.

In both cases the abscess was dug out by my farrier rather than burst, and the poulticing more for just ensuring all the infection was drawn out.

I usually hot poultice for 3 days, dry poultice for 2 days, then if the horse is comfortable get the farrier back out to put the shoe back on.

Thank you, helped a lot! Pony isn't lame anymore and pretty sure the abscess has drained so hopefully he's on the mend now then

I plug any hole with cotton wool soaked in iodine and use the pony as normal if it is sound the hole grow and the plug falls out
