I was always told if you haven't clipped by 2nd week February forget it. Although if it was me I wouldn't clip a pony or horse now unless it's working hard and sweating.
thanks.
yeh, see I always learned (back when Noah was a boy) first of Feb or forget it - they were clipped back in November, but then life took over, and now it's whether to just leave well alone, or re do them ... in this weather, I'm thinking I'll just let them keep their thermals on.
It really depends on what type of horse you have and the weather to be honest but really it is best to do the last clip before they have their coat change.
I always do my last clip and some of my clients around end of Feb.
Unless you have a mega top show native then as far as Im concerned there is no such thing as a last date to clip. You can clip all year round with no problem. Although I might be tempted to lay off a bit until this snow thaws!
QR: Ive clipped beginning of March before, didn't make a jot of difference to summer coat. We haven't clipped our show pony yet, probably do it as soon as he starts to moult, thats the best time in my opinion.
I have a very hairy sec b games pony, the Pony Club Area comp for games is always in May and there is a team Tack & Turnout and he looks like a pit pony by the end of the winter, I clip him out in late March/early April.
By May he looks fab, hair grown back bay, gleaming coat, easy to bath. Clip daughter's cob all year round if he is competing, because it helps him work when it's hot.
Eventers, racehorses, cobs all clip year round if necessary. I don't believe in the February rule. I am going to get Tarquin clipped as soon as I get paid. He was clipped in November and then been out of work due to my personal situation. Now if I sit on him for 10 minutes he is drenched so it is only fair to clip him - its a welfare thing IMO.
