I had a man come to do my horses back on saturday. Bit of history Rocky is an ex racer who came out of racing due to a shoulder injury. I was very lucky as Chris (back man) is going to train me in what he does and he wanted to show me how amazing his treatment is. All he did was run his finger nail over Rocky's back and neck ect, and when he flinched we made a note. so when we had done his whole body we went back to the hotspots, Chris applied some preassure and i lifted his legs to release the tention he had two really bad spots in his bum and he has an old shoulder injury which he corrected. Bless Rocky he was very lame for 48 hrs had to give him some bute (he is a bit of a girl!) this is apprently normal not sure as never had this type of treatment done before. Well anyway I rode him last night 3 days on from having this done and he was amazing, Chris said he would be loads better but I am a but sceptical about these things. Rocky does not like to lengthen his stride or bend to the left and cantering is always ropey well he was brilliant he moved forward, he carried himself and never argued!! he never tilted his head in canter and is full of beans!! This is amazing could not believe it my horse is feeling great!!!

I do feel a bit terrible as he must have been in loads of pain!!

Sorry this is so long I was just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of treatment done on their horses??

Ooooooooooooo where in the world are u?
Im currently in the search for a new back person/physio in my area!

no it was not anything I have seen done before at all, he is the only person in the UK practicing this. All it is pressure to release!! I am in Cambs but he is from Tyne and Wear I am so looking forward to completing my course with him!! he also does all the accupuncture and stuff. he come this way every month to treat. The first horse he does is free and after that it is £70 and i can honestly say I would pay for it!! i was not sure if I would ever be willing to pay that sort of money as I know most of them are 30-40 but he is amazing and what he has done to rocky has made a huge difference!!

Sorry to be a cynic - and am prepared to be shot down in flames - but ALL horses will flinch if you run a finger nail or the blunt end of the hoofpick firmly down their spines. They're supposed to. My vet told me it's the sign of good a nervous system response. Like tapping your knee with a rubber hammer - knee should twitch {{steps back and awaits abuse}}

When did he finish his bute? Because presumably if he had it for 48hrs after and this is only day 3, he still has bute in his system......

You dont run your nail down the spine its hard to explain but I know what you mean but this has nothing to do with the spine or that area. you would run your nail over the muscle lets take the shoulder (a location you would not expect them to flinch) and all you see is the skin twitching. rocky did not pull away or dip, and where the saddle went he was fine. its bazzar to watch and is fab and made a huge difference

Box Of Frogs you are absolutely right, its when a horse doesn't flinch or move away from your finger pressure sensation you want to be concerned!! This is exactly what my husband tells his clients that panic when they have had a 'back man' out just as precaution and they find something wrong even though the horse has been going well but because they come on the yard to do some elses horse they think they ought to get them to look at their horse too!! However, Effervesent has noticed a dramatic difference so they must have helped something if not just stimulating blood supply to the nerve endings.
