Kid on the yard bought an Irish jumping pony which wore a pelham with rounding. Has a soft mouth and didnt pull in the bit. Kid now wants to do a bit of dressage with him, but is finding it difficult to get the pony to be happy in the snaffle.

They have tried a loose ring french link and at the moment he is in a hanging snaffle with french link mouth piece. Pony just sticks his nose in the air and locks his jaw. Has had teeth and back checked. Also had new saddle last month. Pony is a pure bred connie and is now just taking the mick out of his teenage jockey. Instructor appears to have no answers.

Would like to be able to suggest an alternitive before kid gets fed up and sticks pelham back in the mouth.

he rides the same for everyone. Has probably only been schooled enough to be aimed at a jump and go very fast over big jumps.

Spider he was ridden in a straight bar stainless steel pelham.

I do have a couple of nue shule snaffles one is the verminator(sp) and a hanging snaffle. Bettter offer them one of them to see how he goes in it.

Could it maybe be that the snaffles are putting pressure on his tongue?
I was looking at the bits in my local saddlery yesterday and they had a straight bar bit with tongue arch on a loose ring, worth a try?

If he has always been in the pelham he might not like the link. Try a mullen mouth eggbutt snaffle, less movement but still allows room for the tongue.

We have tried the Magic loose ring but he grabbed the bit and took off round the outdoor school several times so that is a definate no.
