accident out riding now horse has huge wound what to do??

Kali and i were out riding tonigt and she slipped nd fell on a sheer face she got up not lame we came home.

She caught her knee with her foot and has removed a palm sized bit of skin.

Good bits:

she's not lame
she's not too bothered about it.
it's notbleeding much.
It's at the bottom of her knee and will naturally drain
she doesn't need stitching

bad bits!
It's huge


I have bandaged her all up and put sightly salted animalintex over thewound and badgged i and gamgeed it etc andput her to bed with a bute.

here is nothing o stitch up as it's more of a deep scrape? what would you do with it tomorrow, what potions and bandgaging would you do i'll take piccies tomorrow if that will help.

When one of mine went down on the road, i found flushing the area with cold hosing the best and leaving it open so the air could get to it, it really depends on how deep it is, i'll look at the pics tomorrow and see if I have any helpful suggestions.

I got a mare called Kali.
 
Really hard to advise without seeing it. If it is a graze then I wouldn't want to keep it wet, I would want a scab to start forming, so bandage with dry animalintex just to keep foreign bodies out (after an initial hibiscrub wash).
 
It is more than a graze she has skinned her knee, it was fast and not deep but huge area.

With it being on her knee i'm wondering if it was wetter whethe it whould remain more flexible than scabbing up??

Will hibiscrub tomorrow, the electric has died at my yard and it was dark so patched her up and made her comfy will try to be a better mum tomorrow!.



I managed to be thrown at speed onto the same sheer surface she tried to climb up (of her own accord bein dizzy!!) but just bruised, she hurt herself more gettin up than falling
 
Hmm i've never heard of another Kali - her racing name is keyalzao and i couldn't really make any stable names out of that so i stole the first 4 letters from her boyfriends (kaliyoun) as it sounds better!!
 
Give it a good clean up and if you can get some wound healing gel, such as Intrasite then pop some of that on it. Moist wound healing is the way to go

Main thing is to make sure any foreign material is out, so hosing, as suggested would be good.

Mine was a rescue TB, I got her and her sister come in and I didn't know their names because their passports were being forwarded later so I called this one Kali after Kalifornia the film with David Duchovny and Brad Pitt, the other I called Shania. My names were far better than their real ones once I got the passports, they had really sappy names, so I kept the ones I gave them! I still have Kali, I will never part with her, she took alot of turning around, the other was just underweight and I sold her on as a broodmare once in full bloom and i'd had 2 foals from her.
 
Going through similar situation at the mo with my horse, he tried jumping a fence and caught his hind leg. Lots of swelling the whole way up his leg the next morning just a little stiff. Kept him in and walked him twice a day for 20mins followed by cold hosing, all seemed well until 2 days after all the flesh begain dropping off causing an area a little larger than a hand to be exposed i was expecting infection but it was clean pink flesh! creams are ok but hard to get on and they have to be bathed away on a daily basis to make sure infection isnt building up. Iv just sprayed it with an antibacterial spray to stop infection and let the air get to it. Its about 2weeks after now still open about the size of a 50p coin with no scabs just black skin. Now using hair regrowth creams!!! Good luck
 
my horse had a gash about an inch and a half above his knee after being kicked and chased over a paddock fence.
to cut a long story short after daily visits from the vet for 2 weeks he was on permanant box rest for over 20 weeks with weekly visits. then he was allowed out on monday and is now staying out 24/7.
his knee was at least 4 times bigger than normal and there was a bit of a worry that his tendon sheath had been damaged badly but he wasn't lame.
after a couple of days at the vets, 2 sets of x rays , bloods , swabs , scans, and loads of antibiotics. im now over £1500 poorer and can finally ride my horse, only in walk to build up his leg again. iv'e got to say it now looks better than i ever imagined it would and me and my horse are really close after this,.
but then 2 days later another horse on the yard went down on a gravel drive being loaded into a tralier , and had deep slits the length of her knees, she was lame for a few days and after 2 weeks it had healed lovely and has never had a problem since.
she was cheaked by the vet, and cold hosed 3x a day.
hope your horse gets better soon.
 
Id put Cut Heal on it - its fabulous stuff and recommended by my vet for use on wounds that cant be stitched. Ive always used it, including on a massive very nasty wound and never had any probs with proud flesh or any scarring (amazingly even the hair has grown back in normally).

I would probably leave it uncovered as I think its good to let it breathe, or at least during the day you could and then at night if your worried about her getting it dirty when lying down, you could cover it again (Ive used Tubigrip in the past).
