The 4yo that caused the problems with our horses (jumping over gates etc)

the AM was bringing him in today, he went sideways and reared up, as he came down he caught her head and she landed on her bum and he pissed off

she cut her head, and has had it glued; we took her to the doctors... very shook up and shouldnt go back to work, very stiff neck and cant get out of bed

very lucky it wasnt worse

im now going to wear a hat to t/o and b/i
and all staff now have to aswell

i wish i always wore mine, i was knocked over a couple of times in the summer, and on xmas day
my OH little showjumper has been a pain recently, so ill wear my hat even to turn him out onto the hardstandings!!

sorry its a bit boring, just makes you realise
x

Very true.

We forget how unsafe some of the things we do everyday are.

I was leading a horse out of the arena after riding him, something spooked him, knocked me down, jumped over me

and caught my hat with his hoof...

Very often I take my hat off walking down to the yard after riding.

Glad your friend isnt too badly injured.

It does make you realise when something like this happens. A little girl i know (5 at the time) had an accident with a carrot in a field, with 5 horses that wanted it!! Il never now how she survived!!

hes messed about before though... i couldnt catch my pony when he ran off the other day
(normally she would of told him off)
YO is going to bring him in now with a slip on and tell him off if he does it again, if that doesnt work then hell be in a chiffney

yep stuff we do everyday just gets into a habit; then when it goes wrong...

It is things like this that do make you realise, ever since my horse kicked me in the coccyx last year and fractured it I have never viewed her or any other horse in the same way.
I have always been very trusting as my mare has always been a saint, and although she is still on the whole very good, I do not trust her completely, she seems to act like an idiot horse some days in terms of spookiness/jumpiness, she even went to panic tonight on the yard, think where the white snow had affected her vision then came on yard and things looked odd!
Anyway, hope your friend is ok.

Wearing a hat for turn out and bring in is so important. I have twice been knocked over and trampled.

I am as bad as anyone else and don't always wear a hat but I always do with new horses or for loading potentially tricky horses.

On our own farm now I try not to lead in. Our horses can walk themselves down to the yard and I let them in one by one through a pedestrian gate.

at the yard they always used, as another friend got kicked in the back and her kidney split! i will do that now as ive been knocked over and jumped over and stuff

xx

Too true, its the silly little things that turn into the worst accidents. At a big competition we were being "rushed" by an official to unload the horse for the vet. Should have told her to P+++ off.Result was horse lept off ramp and almost completely severed riders achilles tendon.

The worst part was that the poor girl had to scrub all the grazes on her face and arms to remove the tar and grit because it would have "Tattooed her.7 hours at A&E for a moments rushing.Never again.

My YO/boss had her skull fractured whilst leading a jumpy horse - and she was wearing a hat at the time! If she hadn't had her hat on, she would have been killed. So she is very strict about everyone at the yard wearing a hat to t/o and b/i, if not all the time then at least with the horses that may be difficult. I occasionally wear a hat bringing Scooby in, not because he is difficult at all, but because he shares his field with several boisterous geldings who sometimes start having a little scrap by the gate while you're trying to get out!

Just goes to show, riding isn't the only risky thing we do with our horses!

My horse fractured my skull by headbutting me while I was pulling his mane last year. Again, I was rushing. I haven't learnt my lesson though, I don't wear my hat around my horses unless I'm riding. I do try not to rush anything though! I figure these accidents are few and far between and getting in a car is still more dangerous.

A few years ago i had an accident on my jumping pony whilst at hickstead, then a few days later as i was getting her ready to go home, she headbutted me by accident and broke my nose even more and i ended up needing to have an operation on it a few months after.

Poor girl! Glad it wasn't worse!

The identical thing happened to me last year. Youngster fed up with no work because of the snow, reared up when I was leading him in. Luckily I was wearing a hat so I was fine, but the hat was broken which is quite scary!

she had a 1cm cut

cos she is tiny... shes always really dominant, cos shes not big enough to handle big horses if that makes sense... and they all seem to respect her, hed never messed around with her until then!!

I always wear gloves at least to bring in due to my 5yr old pulling back when spooking and cutting my finger, only small but made me think and could barely use it for days!

oh yea and i should wear gloves, but they make life so hard!! i have a wonky finger from where i broke it
and they are like granny hands and are all puffy in the cold

So true last year my mums friend got kicked out her yard for her badly behaved horse and kept it at our house it lasted a week then it headbutted me when I was trying to get mine in and I k/o in the field my dog woke me up nightmare horse

Got dragged across concrete on a hack years ago while leading my boy, he panicked and took off and i forgot to let go, he stood on my arm and i hit the ground head first luckily with hat on, because of that i dont even undo my chinstrap when leading him down from the school but thats excellent advice, i do all the turnouts at the weekend and never wear oone but i will be from now on x

Poor girl.
Several weeks ago a girl at our yard was turning her horse out in the arena who had been in his stable for several days. Hes 17.2 and barged passed her, crashed through wooden gate and galloped off accross icey road, luckily into a friends garden. Luckily the girl didnt suffer serious damage, she was just very swollen and unable to move for days.
