Accredited Trainers (BD,BSJA,BE)

There were several things I needed to do to apply for BD Trainer's accreditation. The first thing I did was to contact the office for the application forms. I needed to have a minimum of two clients competing at affiliated level and they had to complete a form with their details, competition experience and results and sign to say that I had been training them for a minimum of 9 months. I have to repeat this process each year. I also have to attend a training course each year such as The National Trainers Forum or BD National Convention.

I have to have a first aid qualifiaction and suitable insurance. This is similar to the requirements for the BHS register of instructors so I was covered here. I am not sure if there are additional requirements for those who do not already have a professional teaching qualification or not.

Also accreditation process may change when UKCC is fully up and running.

My sister has just applied for BSJA one. I don't know a huge amount about it but she has to do a 2 day course next week, which includes riding and training. she is paying for it. Think they have to pass various stages. I'll try and find out more

BE are now insisting on a test of sorts and proving that you have ridden or trained to a level but if you are trained by as some of the candidates are examined by people they get large amounts of training/rides from the system might well be open to abuse. BSJA are much tougher with their exam process

Thank you all for your answers! I also heard that for BD you should go through the apprenticeship scheme but no idea whether that's correct.

Shez - if you do hear more about your sister's course please let me know

Yes, I was wondering how it is going to look like with the UKCC being developed for equestrian sports. However, from what I have heard it seems it will not affect current structures much as its content is more coaching orientated rather than sport-specific.

Can I ask to what level you had to compete yourself?

I t strikes me that in the BSJA you can only become an accredited coach if you are still competing. Regardless of the level you used to compete at or the experience you have.
I gave up competing years ago, but it doesnt mean Ive forgotten what I learned over the years, or that I dont know how to coach riders.
Needless to say I wont be applying to be an acrcedited coach...under any scheme

What a strange rule

I would think people who stop competing due to age, injuries etc but still have a passion for the sport, knowledge and teaching skills would be sought after by governing bodies...
It seems that many competitors have no time for teaching (or going through qualification procedures) while chasing one show after another.

My sister has asked me to go with her. Not sure if poss but it would be interesting. She was on the home pony teams and has jumped on the county circuit. She hasn't had a huge amount of teaching experience - but she is dedicated. We have had a lot of training over the years! With a bit of help from me (me not being confident enough to do it myself but if anyone knows me I'm not big headed but quite good on the floor! shame I've lost it when riding can't jump bigger than discovery anymore!) My sister moved away this June and I miss her! Losing it now! My OH has passed his AH and has taught at PC. I went to assist him once and was appauled with what he knew and took over! I'm glad the BSJA have got this system in place. Sorry still don't know anymore at min!!

When I apllied to be a BD trainer I was a group six rider. I think though that you need only compete or have competed at affiliated level. Not sure on this though!

In the Trainers Databse it lists alongside each trainer the highest level they have competed eg 6 R means Elementary regional . Alongside it says the level they have coached to. two riders must have attained the level with you before this is recorded.

Its taken me a good 12 years or so to get to the level of qualification, experience and accreditation I have, the forms for BD took minutes!
