For me not my horse !! : )
I had a very nasty fall last summer where a horse reared up and over on the road without warning and landed on me, I fractured my back and had a nice stay in hospital. Great for the figure I lost loads off weight. Anyway I'm suffering now and my back clicks a lot and i'm very stiff in my lower back. Anybody tried anything which might help me? I know there's lot off things to try but do any off these tablets work.?
Also this is my main worry, I am now lop sided in the saddle. If my stirrups are equal I'm in terrible pain and can't ride like it but 1 hole makes the difference and I'm fine but I know this is making me un even on my horses and wonder how long term this will work? At the mo they don't seem to care and all seems well but I am worried about it. The docs think my body protector saved me a lot more injurys or a total broken back so thank god for them I say. Any advice would be great

Get yourself off to a decent chiropractor - worth their weight in gold and sorted me, and my unevenness out after a car crash. I had to have some quite intensive treatment but now go once a month and the difference im my movement is amazing.

Mind you, you can have no secrets from your chiro, I go on the way to work and he laughs that I always go in suited and booted, looking very professional, but he knows the secret of the safety pins holding up my hems :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

As GI says, a good chiropractor - go by recommendation if possible. I've tried loads in the past, and finally settled on one who gets the job done in the best way possible :).

Also try a sports physio.

It could be that one just works right for you, but you need to try to find out.

Go for the sports versions wherever you can as they understand the drive, that you need to be riding and not sitting around taking it easy :)

Try, depending on what you can manage and cope with(!), pilates, yoga, Tai Chi.

Find out what your body responds best to. With mine its warmth (cold will have me in tears in minutes).

Try some lunge lessons so you can ditch your stirrups and see what feels good and eases and works.

Do simple, basic stretches before and after riding. D1's sports physio was very keen on that one lol :)

If you don't have Sprenger or similar stirrup irons, try some. They have made a world of difference to my knees/ankles!

Back brace. There are a few on the market, so again it will probably be trial and error.

Sorry, gone on a bit lol. Hope you find something that makes it better for you :)

A Mctimmoney chiropracter.
Core excercises - other half broke his back and went to a rehab clinic once a week and that is what they based everything on. They concerntrate on strenthening the area around the break.
Bendy Irons
There was also a cream he tried and applied to the area of pain which worked wonders, we bought it from a local show. I will try and find the pot.
If I think of anything else I will let you know.
Oh yes he always swears by a bath every day - never a shower.

Chiropractor but think you will need to be referred by your docter. Remeber to wear a decent bra though! dont try to force yourself into a "correct" position riding though until you have been sorted out as you will damage yourself more. Try to do it asap though as you now have started to use different muscles to work - incorrectly - around the damage and you need to undo this. Another vote for Sprengers - could not ride without them as I have wrecked my knees!

Sounds a good plan

Have you not discovered Wonderweb?

Yes to Chiropractor! But seek personal recommendations first, as it would really help if you could find someone that has got the equine quals as well as human, as if you're crooked, then you may find your horse is going differently on one rein to the other and it would be helpful if you can find someone to work alongside you both.

I go to a chiropractor and he's very good...but I don't think it does any lasting good, unless you back it up with some gentle and regular stretching, to enforce / reinforce any adjustments they do to your joints and bones. Plus swimming, if you can be arsed!

i ended up very crooked after several abdominal ops followed by adhesions and, like you, worried about the effect on my horse. The best bit of advice I was given by an instructor was to be aware at all times of keeping the same weight on each seatbone. To train myself I would use a Limpet pad between saddle and horse and examine it after a ride. I could then see if it was more flattened/shinier under one seatbone or the other. It also pays to learn how to examine your horse's back for any tenderness, heat or harder areas of muscle under and just behind the saddle (my horse physio showed me). There are lots of therapies you can try but you will find that some will not suit you. Whatever you do, start very gently and do not make yourself hurt enough for your muscles to stiffen up the next day as it will only make the pain cycle worse. I could not keep going to Pilates classes but I did some of the milder exercises at home and found out what my body would put up with. Be patient, it takes a long time but it does get better. Good luck.

I go to an osteopath for my back, knee, ankle, neck problems. I've never worked out the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor, but have only ever visited an osteopath.

I went yesterday for a few 'issues' and after one session felt as if he had given me a new knee, no aches or pains and riding last night was fab :)

I need a couple more sessions to sort out my neck though.

Same thing happened to me three years ago....same as everyone else's replies...Get a good sports physio, have regular sessions with them (took me 12 months with once a week wickedly expensive, but what price for health...) and then a check-up/maintanance session every three months or so (still going to them).

Meanwhile, try a pilates class. Best thing for maintaining fitness and core strenth. Don't worry, with time, it will all work out. I'm sitting even straighter than before, but have to remain fit, otherwise it all goes to pot! Best of luck!
