Posted in CR but no responses, possibly because I've waffled, but my head feels full of cotton wool :( Can anyone offer advice?

So, as Christmas Day seems to be the only day for months that we had some sunshine and not relentless rain, my 4 horses went out. After a lovely turkey lunch (and plently of wine!) I popped up to the field to get the 2 stabled boys in, to be confronted with 3 galloping towards me, and one at the far end stood calling and calling :( At this point I feared the worse, and got to him but couldn't move him, so had to go and get my OH to help. Typically they were in the field furthest from the house, but I managed to get him to move and into his stable. Waiting for the vet is the longest wait ever, but he said not to touch it, and I didn't dare look.
It actually looks like a fairly inoffensive cut, but he's obviously been kicked just above his hock slightly to the inside of the leg. The vet thinks he must have been sort of 'crouched' as there must have been tension on the tendon when it happened as the tendon is 25% severed. He has to stay in now for 6-8 weeks and the vet will come back in 4 weeks to scan. I am now terrified that he'll do something to make it worse. He barely moved for 48 hours, but is now more mobile which is worrying me - the vet said to make sure I don't give him too much bute to mask all the pain.
Has anyone any experience with injury to the achilles in horses?
I can't find much on the net (which may be a good thing). Someone has suggested feeding Comfrey which I may try. He's also wearing an ARC machine. I am so worried about him, he's only 6 and so talented.
