PF has always been a good traveller... she seems to now be a nervous traveller

Someone suggested, that as she usually gets picked up around 6 am for shows, but I seldom compete before 10 that she could get a 1ml shot of ACP before getting on the trailer and it would've worn off before I had to jump.
Obviously it would show up in blood tests, but this being Argentina is not really an issue.
So, whilst I'm reluctant to dope missy I just wondered whether you peeps thought this a viable option so we can keep her as relaxed as poss travelling.
I am, of course, looking for a DIFFERENT transport co. to the one I've used until now.

I wouldn't!

Maybe dope her and take her for a journey and then back home to help he forget her bad experience.

Can you get herbal calmers or Nupafeed over there. Can we post you something?

Hm, im not sure. Although ACP seems to have zero effect on beast with regards to clipping, she seemed 'off colour' for a couple of DAYS afterwards. and i would also worry about her ability to maintain balance around corners etc whilst on the lorry. i supose it all depends how she personally reacts to the drug. i would worry about riding, especially jumping whilst using it on my horse, however i know people who do it with no apparent problem. sorry, am absolutely no help!

There are some very good calmers about that are for single day useage as opposed to a dailty supplement. I'm sure people on here have raved about a couple of them. Is that an option?

ACP can affect the heart rate!

Valerian is a banned substance, sid eaffect in excess is death (well it was in Midsomer murders anyway!)

Can you get anything magnesium based?

I don't think I could get them out here, but I can (and will) ask my vet. I'm sure Buenos Aires has a much better range of herbal calmers than is available in my tiny neck of the world; ACP / DMSO and bute are the 3 drugs that are used to treat ANYthing and EVERYthing (just about!)
What do you think of Valerian? Managed to get some of that.

Any chance of finding someone to work with the horse so she's less nervous of loading?

E (ACP will drop her blood pressure for a lot longer than the sedation that results. Competing is possible, but it's not wise)

Have you thought about an alternative route. Get intouch with Crossgates Bioenergetics Ltd (www.crossgatesfarm.co.uk), they do some brill remedies to calm and are cheap too, as they are homeopathic they do not affect the horse's performance. 01729 824731

Have used valerian (sp) many years ago not on my horse, however from memory it will calm the horse all the time as well as when travelling, also for full effect it has to be fed for a couple of days before hand, also we had to experiement with the dossage as it is a bit like ACP in the way you never know how effective it will be one horse to the next. I am dragging this from the recesses of my brain however. I do feel for you, over in Britain we have all these wonderful potions and lotions to help us, is hard for us to imagine not having access to the local feed shop where we have masses of choice. All I can say is try it and see how you get on.

Hi Pilar,
Maybe he isn`t having such a good time with the transporters!
My horse used to be a nightmare to travel and I tried all sorts. She is brilliant now, (tw) but she is in a trailer. I used the Rescue Remedy, on her and myself,

. And I used the Temperelax about 4 times. This was very good but took the edge away when jumping.
I always travel her in a magnetic rug now. They are said to warm up the muscles so less working in the slow gaits, and it promotes healing, and promotes `calm`. I bought this for her as I use magnets on myself as I suffer with lower back and hip problems and it helped me lots.

Ohh, yes, I'm sure I can get them here. How much would I have to feed and would I have to feed for several days before the show?

Ah well, she loads perfectly, she just gets upset in transit. As I don't go with her I wonder a) what the driving is like and b) how well/badly the other horses travel to set her off.

Yes it is, give it a whirl, I have been looking on the net and have found this which explain the effects of valerian
Tranquil

Also the Epson salts are a brilliant idea, don't think I would have come up with that in a million years!

I am not entirely convinved that magnesium would work as a one off in a few hours, so think you would have to load it at least for a few days before an event..I feed it all the year round..about a tablespoonful dissolved in warm water and added to feed

I would recommend Equine America so Kalm paste - comes in an oral syringe (I think it is composed of B vitamins and amino acids). You give it 2hrs prior to event as a one off. They have a website and will send out to you if you can order online. (see link below)

I wouldn't use ACP for this, it will affect your horse's balance when travelling and although the acute effects seem to wear off quickly there can still be an underlying effect on muscles for more than 1hr, (I know this because I have seen it in my own horse) which won't be ideal for riding purposes either.

I know why she's nervous; she fell over in trailer time before last and they left her there until she'd sweated through the winter turnout she shouldn't even have been wearing and hurt her leg because they hadn't put her bandages on, and last time (I know, I should've learnt my lesson, but I figure ONCE is an accident although TWICE is incompetence) they put her next to the one horse that kicks the entire way to the show...
Prior to these two incidents she has always loaded herself and been the BEST traveller ever.
