My horse is currently on box rest for an injury and over the last few days has turned into a bit of a psycho when I have to do in-hand walking twice daily. I was prescribed ACP tablets in connection with a previous injury and now want to use them again to sedate him so our walks are not quite so dangerous! My vet is on holiday so I can't get him to help until next week, but I was thinking of giving him 3 tonight before I walked him - does anyone have any experience of how many are safe to administer for a walk/ride to take the edge off a very stressed out horse? He is 16.2hh and TB build?
Many thanks

I use to use them on my 16.3hh TBX before hunting! I think you can easily give him three, they will take about 30 mins before I would be happy they were in the system.
I got him off them by lavender essence mixed with baby oil and wiping it all over his nose. It is extremely relaxing and I prefered the natural approach. if you havent used lavender before the first few times has amazing effects!

Good luck x x x

A few weeks ago I had a saddle fitting for my 16.2 TB and wanted to take the edge off him so spoke to the vet and he prescribed half a tube of sedolin. I rode him for approx half an hour mainly at a walk and a little bit of trotting and he was fine. Although I don't think I'd risk sedation if on a hack. Have you not thought about using a calmer? I'v tried a few and have had him on global herbs thoroughbred calmer for just over a week and have noticed a difference already

I've used ACP and found that 1 or 2 help take the edge off but..... you need to give them before the adrenaline starts pumping otherwise they don't work.

I'd try the calmer route to tbh. I've had fantastic results with the Topspec one

Thanks for the replies. I have owned the horse for a year and he is normally so laid back I haven't needed to try a calmer etc before. But he has suddenly got very stressed out and so I don't want to jeopardise his recovery by either stopping the walking or carrying on acting like a dangerous loon! I had thought about sedalin but I can't be prescribed that until my vet returns next week - so thought the ACP might get me through the next few days. I was worried a calmer would take too long to get into his system? Will try the tablets tonight then and see what he is like after half an hour.... I used them on him once before but couldn't remember how many I was told to give him.
Just to add once they have taken effect he is only being walked in hand/ridden in walk for up to 10 minutes....

My vet told me to give 5 to my Dales pony when I started riding her again. She weighed 420kg if that's any help. He said mo9re than that and she might stumble. It did work though, like someone else said they really need to have taken them before getting agitated!

Global herbs do an instant calmer that works in about 1-2 hours. I think you can give them twice a day as well. You could give them him for the next few days till your vet gets back. They also deliver next day!

I had a very similar size/build horse and used ACP and valium for the same reason (after he had double barrelled me in the stomach when being led out to graze

)

I used up to 6 of each tablet, administered 30 mins before I took him out. He was quite resistant to sedatives though, sedolin never used to touch him

Sounds like my monster - did a lovely side kick with a back led into my hip the other night and boy did it hurt (this is the horse has never even lifted a leg or bucked in the whole year I have owned him!)
I will be giving the tablets when I arrive so when he is calm in the stable and fingers crossed they will work...will try 4 and see if that is enough, if not I will try more tomorrow. My vet says it takes an IV dose equivalent to a shire to even get near my horse - he fights sedation very well!

Might invest in the Global Herbs calmer as well then - i don't really like the idea of drugging my horse so would prefer a herbal alternative to try as well...

My horse is on box rest and for handwalking my vet suggest i give him between 8-12 tablets 30mins before hand, i always give him 12 tho, 3 wouldnt do anything to be honest.

Do remember to wear your crash hat when walking in hand - I had a friend who got a fractured skull last year when walking out a horse that had box rest. I'm sure you do already but just in case.
