My new vet told me today that she can't give me any more tablets, but I can buy it in the much more expensive form of sedalin paste.

Same drug, same dose, but a different form.

Is this true?
 
You're lucky you have been given the tablets for this long! For years now we haven't been allowed to sell them for use in horses. Sedalin or Relaquin (same drug, different manufacturers) are your only options.
 
There is something called the 'cascade' which all vets must abide by and the first line states that if there is a drug licensed for a particular use (i.e. sedation) in a particular species (in this case horse) then it must be used.

As Sedalin/Relaquin is licensed for use in horses for sedation it must be used, ACP tablets are not licensed for use in the horse (but they are for dogs).

The cascade system is linked to us being part of Europe and the classification of food and non-food animals, and unfortunately for us, horses are classed as food producing animals under EU law.
