I have recently purchased one of these for my poor boy who is recovering from sacro iliac problems. He loved the equilibrium massage pad and it seemed to help him hugely, so i opted to give him the advantage of buying a secondhand activo combi. So, as I might have guessed, my horse is frightened by the massage element of the rug!! Horror, this is my pride and joy and I really wanted to try to help him with it having heard amazing things about them. He gets very nervy and jumps out of his skin with the pulses at certain times! Does anyone have any experience of this and how to overcome it. Could it be causing him pain? Oh and I had such high hopes!!

I have one and find it a godsend on lots of different horses, can't say i've ever had a problem with horses being nervous of it although maybe abit surprised by the pulses until they get used to it and then they tend to doze off. So only thing i can suggest is repetition and calming influences to help him relax until he realises it's good for him.

Sorry not much help

Hi Louise and many thanks for your reply. I agree, I will try to get him used to it in small doses, use the PEMT treatment alone so he trusts the rug again and try and introduce the massage slowly. I really want to give it a go as I have heard no negative reports on these rugs at all. I am not sure if there is a different intensity of massage either. I still have to work out how everything works and I am expecting the lady from the company to call me tomorrow with some info. Fingers crossed we can get through this phase.

I use it on my mare who we believe is suffering a repeated minor injury to same region as your lad from hoolying round her field. She loves it, first time I used the massage she twitched and looked at me like *wtf?!* with eyes out on stalks but has been fine ever since. I actually popped it on her today after a hard jumping lesson away from home and she was so fast asleep that I decidedly to quietly put the ramp up and drive her home with it on, since she had a rug over the top and her other travel gear on, she was still dozing when I checked her prior to putting the ramp down :p so no pain issues for us! :D

I also use it on all my others and love it :).

I'd recommend ringing the company as they can programme in special sequences etc so perhaps they could programme you an individual one to use whilst he gets used to it? :)

I have one and use it on lots of my horses but the horse that it was bought for that had back problems as a result of hock spavins hated it. He got worse and worse and in the end would go mad when he saw the rug, no idea why
