Actual is the amount of prize money. Notional is a figure awarded to the horse to even out the difference in amount of prize money paid out at different venues.
Notional award for a win is
BN = £15
Disco =£20
New = £25
Fox =£30
So if a horse won a disco at Addington his actual winnings would be £50 as that is what addington pays out but his notional would only be £20
So if you won a BN that had massive prize fund because its well sponsored and "the class of the day" even though you may end up with £££ on the horses card from the cheque you took home. The BSJA will still look on it notionally as £15 making your horse the same level as one who won £15 at their local show centre on the same day!

Thankies-that is a lot simpler than i thought!

Well, it *should* be
It gets a little less straightforward when you start looking at placing you've had in Newcomers / 1.10m Opens combined classes where i managed to pick up £30 notional for a win against a £40 actual....and then there was the time i got £15 notional for coming 4th in a 1.05m....compared to £20 notional for coming 2nd in a 1.10m....oh yes, and then there added complexity of Amateur classes and whether or not you actually get any notional winnings awarded at all....or not.....perhaps......maybe
Perhaps it's about time they just called them points. It won't making working out how many points you get any easier but at least people won't confuse them with actual money won?
Indeed - it doesn't affect me personally but I never understood why they didn't introduce a points system (as they'd had in Ireland for years) rather than notional prize money.
