I have two horses - one fits amigo rugs and is narrow and slim, the other fits Rambo as has a huge neck and the V front closure means he doesn’t get strangled when he grazes

His old Rambo (about 20yrs old! Was my previous horses rug) finally started to leak - I think I got my monies worth! But stupidly I bought a Lemieux rug as it has the same front. Leaks like a sieve, as does the replacement they sent me

My little horse has an amigo, fits him brilliantly and is waterproof. But I do need a neck cover.

Just went and had a look for an amigo with a neck cover and a new Rambo and almost had a heart attack at the price

Are there any other brands which will keep my horses dry, ideally for longer than a year or two?! I’ve used weatherbeeta in the past - are they still good?

I need recommendations that will fit their entirely different shapes (different brands obviously fine)

And hopefully not break the bank as much as Horseware?

Shires have been very good - this week has been pretty heavy rain and my rugs are at least 2 years old and have kept them dry. I have not had great experiences with Weatherbeeta turnouts, their stable rugs are lovely though.
Edited to add - I have the 50g and 100g Trojan and Highlander from Shires

I’ve had 3 out today in the torrential rain. It’s turn into a bit of an experiment. One in shires, one in weatherbeata and one in horseware amigo. The rugs are in good nick and the shires is the newest( bought this year) and the amigo the oldest( probably 5 years).
The shires leaked the most by far, then the horseware a little bit and the amigo not at all.

You get what you pay for!
I would by a 2nd hand horseware over a new shires, definitely.
P.s. no horses were harmed during this experiment and the leaky rugs have been replaced with dry ones 😁

Recently bit the bullet & got a Rambo Optimo 0g for my very chunky deep warmblood after lots of trial & error! It's only this & premier equine that dont strangle him! I love shires & they fit my Welshy, but have found out the newer ones (just bought a highlander) theyve placed the front clip higher so they dig in when his heads down! Which is a shame as the big shoulders etc are perfect.

You know what really annoys me about Horseware? Most of them have the neck cover sold separately, and can I find the matching neck cover to buy?! Of course I can’t!

I like that you can buy separately as my youngster needs a bigger neck than rug size. Pain if you can’t get the one you need though. I have a stock of neck covers bought really cheaply, I only ever use no fill or 100g max necks as it’s really just for rain protection.

I like it too as I find Horseware hood very skimpy and like to size up for the necks

But this time I am infuriated as can’t find anything in stock in the sizes I need to match the rugs I want

Always Rhino or Rambo.

I was swayed last year and bought cheaper. They both leak.

36 hours of rain in a 16 year old Rhino and he is dry as a bone inside. I just added a neck cover and liner today as he looked a little chilly. No, the neck cover doesn't match (it did when both rug and cover were new but I rarely fit a neck cover so it is now a different colour LOL) but it too will be waterproof.

I don't buy secondhand as someone will have washed them, then they are not so waterproof. I buy in the sales and hose the outside and wipe the inside, and they stay waterproof.

I was a keen fan of Premier Equine when I had the horses but swear by Bucas for the donkeys. I have some Bucas rugs that are over 10 years old and still going strong with yearly wash and reproof with the correct products.

I bought two new Bucas ones for them again this year and the quality is still as good as their old ones. Well worth the money I think.

I'm not sure of the best make for a finer build but my swish rugs are great for my broad-shouldered warmblood. Never leak and I've had some for years.

I’ve heard really mixed things about swish - some have said they are great, others that they’ve leaked from the start

Shires, you can get different styles depending on how wide or narrow your horse is but honestly they are fab!!

I don't know if I've been lucky but bought all sorts from them over the years and mine live out so the rugs are certainly well tested.

I like Swish too
Mine aren't that old but are still completely leakproof and I love that they have really decent tail flaps, not like the skimpy little things on a lot of rugs

Have a look at Swish. I have a medium weight with hood and love it. I do paint them in the summer when I have washed them with Fabsil and if the weather has been pouring in the winter and they come in wet, I dry it out and give it a spray with Fabsil spray.

Don’t get a weatherbeeta! I got the comfitec dynamic (not a cheap model!!!) and it leaked as did the 2 replacements! I was furious

I bit the bullet and went for a rambo (hope valley or houghton country have them on offer) i am now a rambo convert, my horse is warm and dry in his 50g despite being clipped, because this one doesn’t leak! The bonus is my WB liners fit underneath

Interesting that your LeMieux leaked, I have a 0g which is HEAVILY used and a 100g which has lasted a winter and they're both fully waterproof. I swear by them now as I really like the fit around the neck/shoulders. His are the Kudos range which is the slightly more expensive line which may have helped, or I've just got lucky

I also have an Amigo Bravo Reflectech Plus 250g which fits really nicely is good quality but was £280 I think from memory so not a cheap option. I got to the point where I just grit my teeth and bought 4 great quality rugs as I was sick of rebuying or worrying that they weren't a great fit on his neck

Shires Trojan for my thick set heavy cob. Waterproof and must be four or five years old now. Big but thought 5, the rain trickles down his neck and wets his shoulders.
