My old vet has been doing Acupuncture on different animals (dogs cats, horses etc) for a number of years now. I am struggling to find help for my Irish Setters' arthritis, even vet prescription medicines have not helped but it is not severe( Hips).I am tempted to try acupuncture , but it is expensive. I don't mind the cost, IF it works!

Has anyone tried it? How successful did you find it for your dog?

My Labrador had a sore back and we could not get to the bottom of it, our very good vet suggested acupuncture. I must admit to being a bit skeptical and when he said that the dog would have to lie down on the table for 25 mins I was a bit concerned about this as he was always anxious and restless at the vets. As soon as the needles went in he fell asleep which made me realise it must be doing something. He came right quickly after his treatment and had two more. My vet did say that it doesn't always work and it is best to have 3 treatments.

I would certainly try it as there are no nasty side effects, so apart from the cost which usually isn't that much there is really nothing to loose.

Acupuncture was the only thing that cleared up my Tennis Elbow a couple of years ago after weeks of struggling with drugs and physio.

Good luck with your dog.

Would certainly give it a go...I have only had it done on myself and it was great

I have an Irish too ...lost her sister last year to bloat / torsion

I'm a massive fan. One of the vets I work with practices it and the results she gets are amazing. My little dog has arthritic hips and associated sore back and she is having acupuncture at least weekly. She got. A bit worse initially and then boy did it make a difference to her. She is so much more comfortable.

I've never even considered the question of acupuncture for dogs or any animal, but I feel that it 'could possibly' be of very real benefit. There'd be no need for placebos because animals don't have the capacity to tell lies or have imaginations, so in your shoes o/p, I'd definitely give it a try.

The only question mark that I can see, is that with the skeletal changes that advanced arthritis must involve, just how acupuncture could help that, I'm not sure. Best ask the vet I suppose. If you go ahead, will you let us know the results?

Alec.
