Is anyone as cross as me at Addington's failure to cancel tomorrow's Event Day and offer a refund/credit?
In the first place, I would question the morality of encouraging people in the South East to turn out on icy roads tomorrow, but then to have the cheek to run it as an indoor jumping event only (one round) and only offer a £10 reduction if you turn up smacks of greed.
I will be writing to both Addington and Horse and Hound to express my annoyance.
They may have won BSJA venue of the year in 2007 but watch this space ...............

A friend of mine is furious about it. She can't even get the lorry down her drive. There have been two fatal accidents on the Addington to Buckingham road in the last month. My horses are skating their way to the field so I hope Addington have salted all their lorry parks and pedestrian and horse walkways. I suppose they're running a business but it affects more than that. Imagine the headline if there was an accident involving horses in transportation to Addington. Maybe they'll think again?

I drive past Addington four times a day, most days and would say avoid, avoid, and avoid!!

I drove past it last night and even the Land Rover was sliding all over the place!!

The arenas and car parking for still a blanket of snow - not sure if they've done anything about it today though?

I'm not due to go over that way today but if I get the time I'll pop over and report back. The A413 was a nightmare yesterday morning with the snow (it took me over 2 hours to do the 12 mile drive to Aylesbury), and was horrible with the ice late last night!!!

I know it's annoying esp if they're not willing to give refunds but it's not worth having a fatal accident for..!

We never managed to get an entry in as had been intending to drop it in at the SJ on Monday evening. I am now glad we didn't as we can't get cars into our yard, let alone a lorry out! Most venues in the area have "postponed" events rather than canx and stated that entries have been transferred to the new date- it would be interesting to know if they will refund if you can't attend on the new date?

Doesn't surprise me about Addington at all!
They may be a posh swanky centre but their general attitude stinks.

Possibly the rudest people every IMO! According to my friend whose daughter is entered 'they have cleared their drive so there is no problem' Perhaps they could come and clear everyone elses too

You only get your £10 back if you compete on Sunday anyway

Yes, I agree with the post theat it is immoral of them to be encouraging people to be on the roads in their lorries in this weather. We wont be going as not even sure we can get the lorry off the yard, and it just isnt worth the risk to the horses. I think it is a very sneaky way of them avoiding giving any refunds - but the trouble is, we will probably still enter other events there are they are so useful.

What a great day what a fab course. Its a shame more people had snow on their drives as Addington have put a lot of time and effort it to clearing the main drive and lorry park for us all. The approach roads were clear too. We had no problems at all. THANKS TO ALL AT ADDINGTON. even better they gave all the prizes so i can use mine on my entry next time. !!!!!!

I work for myself and am a regular rider at Addington. I was told about the forum by people at Addington that were diapointed with the comments so I said I would sign up and log on and say what I thought. I watched the forcast for the last week or two and bought rock salt to be ready. Had to work a little but got rid of my ice and got my horse loaded. Why dont you all lay some salt and move your snow and then it makes loading your horse safer and moving round the yard easier. I am sick of people moaning when others did their best to put an event on.

OOOOOOOOOOOO!!! but what about the all the untreated unclassifed road covered in ice!!!

i think your reply a tad sotty, very very unusal weather condition worst for 18years!

Blimey, I wish it was so easy - ideal world and all that

Addington's attitude stinks to high heaven - they COULD have transfered people's entries to another day, but no, it is all about the money, they do not give a fig about goodwill at all. They ran the event to suit THEM, not the clientele, who were promised dressage, SJing and arena XC - instead they put up 17 jumps, and tried to make themselves look good by offering a £10 refund - BUT ONLY IF YOU COULD GET THERE - WE COULD NOT!!!!!

I am sure they will have to deal with Trading Standards at some point about this

In response to the original question 'is anyone as cross as me...' the answer is a resounding YES!!!

Quite apart from the fact that it would have been risky to say the least to try to get my lorry out of the lorry park and through the village to the main roads, I didn't WANT to drive the best part of 2 hours to Addington to do one extended round of jumps - travel for almost 4 hours, ride poor horse for about 20 mins, travel back again. I don't think so!

I hadn't seen this thread and I started one here, in competition riders

And as for Kean's helpful comments: I am on a large DIY yard. To de-ice the lorry park and then car park (all either thick snow or solid sheet ice) would have taken me bags and bags of salt. And then I'd have got as far as the lane which is 1/2 mile long and was sheet ice on Sunday until at least midday. Would you suggest I hired the council gritter at my expense so I could get to Addington then? Or would you suggest I took my 7.5 tonne lorry out, horse on board and risked sliding out of control on the ice? Come on, be real.

I am furious about the whole thing. To think they can change a class like that and only refund £10 to the people who 'made the effort' (this is what they said to me) to turn up is absolutely ludicrous and completely unprofessional IMO.

It's clear the weather was unconducive to running the event day - that's why they were unable to do the outdoor parts.

The thought process to me is obvious: how can we swing it so that we don't have to cancel and therefore refund all the entry fees? Sod goodwill and sod the poor folk who have paid up and can't get here or don't want to travel miles for one round of jumps.

NOT impressed and VERY disappointed.
