Had my boy at the vets last week for investigations. He was struggling into canter on the left rein, seemed to be trying to canter on three legs, or so it felt to me!! He was cantering fine on the right rein but when vet came out to look at him, I lunged him and hes not using his back right leg properly in the canter - seems loathe to stretch it forward and its not coming under him nicely the way it should. He was not showing up lame when trotted up, and he was not lame during his flexion test either.

So, after xrays and scans showed nothing unusual, he nerve blocked his lower leg, with no difference - so he nerve blocked the top of his hocks and instantly he went much better, was striding out nicely from behind and was moving beautifully. Vet reckons its his joints, degenerative issues.

So, vet is coming out Wednesday morning to do Adequan joint injection and I have put him on joint supplements from last weekend. He is to get 6 weeks of no riding with normal turnout and then brought back into work.

Does anyone have any experience of Adequan joint injections or anything similiar to what my boy is going through. Vet says its not career ending - I did want to do some jumping with him, nothing challlenging, and definately no higher than about 2'6ish which the vet says would be fine - Im worried though because I dont want to cause him any undue stress on his hocks. So if anyone has any experiences they can share - would appreciate some feedback on the injections and the issue in general.

Cookies for reading all that :D

Quite a few horses on our yard have had a course of these injections and they seem to have in general fared very well on them. Horse I look after seems a lot happier since hers, she has spavin in both hocks and was very short strided. She is 20 though and only in very light work. Our vets followed up the injections with Synequin joint supplement which is only available through them and your Insurance should cover it. Its about £150 per tub but its ingredients are very pure and have to say, Lady seems to be moving better in the field since her treatment. Synequin lasts ages too.

Hope that helps you a bit.

Thank you Izzwizz - its nice to hear that there are horses who have faired well on the injections - I dont know anyone who has a horse Arions age (he is 9) who has had to have them - so thanks :)

My horse is 9 too and the vet wants him to have a course of Adequan injections, also physio and the joint supplement you mentioned. He has mild spavin and the bone scan showed a little uptake in one hip and sacroiliac joint on other side. Just interested in the replies to this post..!

My cob had them in 2005 for DJD/Ringbone along with a good glucosamine supplement (vets own brand). He came sound (well 99.9%) within a month and has remained sound since. He isnt cantered or jumped on hard ground but hunts happily on the soft. the last 2 years he has gone onto 1/2 a bute a day but is 19 so i am pleased with how we have managed it.

Jacob had them for coffin joint issues and it didnt make any real difference although thats probably due to the fact that we now know he has enlargement of the collateral ligaments in that foot.
