Hi everyone,

I'm planning on moving my 20-year-old Friesian from the US to the UK this summer (I refuse to go anywhere without him!) He's a wonderful horse and hasn't had a huge amount of issues, but recently we had his stifles injected and he's on monthly Adequan injections, which I intend to keep him on as it's working really well. I did purchase a large supply from my vet at the beginning of the year and plan on bringing it with me, but I was wondering if Adequan was routinely used over there? Is it something that you can get easily, or is there another version of polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (different brand name or such) you use?

Thanks!

My horse has had several courses of Adequan over the last 2.5 years (maybe longer), I really rate it. It's not cheap but easy to get from my vet, who always has a stock in his van. I know quite a few people whose horses have Adequan.

Oh, excellent! I've lived in the UK before and leased horses, but bringing my own is raising all sorts of little questions about things I've never had to deal with before.

If it's not too nosy of a question, how much is "expensive"? Over here, it runs me about $35 a month for the one injection, which worked out to be the same as his old feed-through glucosamine supplement. Am I looking at a huge increase?

I've only ever had it on insurance so I'm not 100% sure (as I don't get a bill from the vet, they send it straight to insurer who pays them directly) but I think it's about £300 for a box of 8 vials. I've read stuff on here which suggests it is a lot cheaper in the US...

Ah, right. Pet insurance is so much more mainstream over there; I wish W. weren't turning 21 so I could insure him!

I can always ask the vet at his new yard. I think my plan will be to stock up over here and bring as much as possible when he travels! Thanks for your help.
