adjusting a pessoa - help

I bought a copy of a pessoa off ebay a couple of years ago and I haven't adjusted it since I first used it on my horse. It came with English instructions of how to fit it but there is nothing to say how much it should be tightened by and after how long of using it.

I have been using it once or twice per week on my mare for the last 6 weeks now so I tried tightening it by 3 inches each side (the rope that goes through the side rings of the roller, through bit to the girth) but my poor ned suddenly looked like I'd strapped her nose to her chest so I slackened it off again.

Can anyone help?

Try just tightening it an inch at a time. 3 Inches can make quite a difference

just shorten it little bits on each side. If you were riding with a nice even contact and then decided to hold the reins 3 inches shorter im sure it would have the same effect. (well it would on mine)
