i made a risky purchase of a 10hh Shetland pony today. She is a companion to another pony and also for my 5 yr old to potter around on (if she proves ok)

there wasn't a lot of opportunity to fully test her, took along my 8 yr old neice who had a sit and walked a little way up the path and back and my 5 yr old had a little sit and she seemed calm and quiet. she was quiet with all the kids etc and horses galloping along the field next to her so I decided personality wise she was what I wanted.

now my question is this.....I would like to be able to test her myself properly before sticking my child on but I am 8 1/2 stone and 5ft tall. would I be much too big to have a sit and test her? I don't want to break her!!

I know I will most likely look silly but wanted your thaughts?????

I'm 5ft4in, kick around the 10st mark and ride my 40-42" chunky shetlands not a problem! Hop on! Have fun! Same as with any horse short steady periods then build it up!

I wouldn't have thought so and also I'm sure the pony would behave very differently for you than for your little on. Test her out in hand and on long reins in all/ as many as situations as you can and do all/ everything to get her used to different situations then try your little one on the lead rein where you'll have control of the pony anyway.

I've ridden mine and fully intend to ride her more when I get a saddle for her :)

Mine is a standard Shetland and I'm 5'1 and between 8 1/2 and 9 stone. The little monster bucked when I kicked her so I don't think I was weighing her down too much ;)

We are in the process of backing and breaking a standard. He will eventually drive but that's easier with more daylight so working on riding for now. My daughter has backed him, she's a little under 9st. I don't have access to a child rider good enough to school a youngster and he's a bloody handful tbh. He carries her no problem, I measured his bone the other day and even allowing for fluff he's about 6" bone.
