Looking for suggestions from all you adults with ponies....

Got my older nieces pony for a while - 14.2hh connemara- will jump about 1m, goes nicely on the flat, yet to try WH as all the classes are for upwards of 153cms!

What classes can I do at local shows? Lots of classes seem to be 16yrs & under. Have jumped him as a horse a couple of times but hes for sale so not looking to do this regularly. Also, although M&M is a possibility, hes not a chunky Connie.

Suggestions gratefully received....

I'm afraid you will have to jump him as a horse at most local shows.

At my local shows it stipulates that horses 14.2hh and under can only compete with a rider 16 years old or under. My 14.2hh Welsh Cob has frequently had to be lumped in with 16hh+ hunter types despite both of us being utter novices (this is for much smaller classes than you're talking about too, less than 3ft!).

M&M working hunter may still be an option for you, though - as a good jumper he'll earn himself a lot more brownie points than a technically correct Connie who puts in an awful jumping round.

You can have so much fun as an adult on a connemara - M&M WHP and ridden classes have no age restrictions, you can do dressage, adult BSJA although he may struggle with the distances in combinations, BE at lower levels, sponsored rides, riding club activities........check out the British Connemara Pony website and look at the Performance Award stuff - it will give you an idea of just how multi talented the breed is.....

Thanks guys,

He is registered with BCPS but unfortunately there isn't too much happening in Scotland!

I will have a look at the Performance Award stuff though, thanks.

As for local shows - I'll just have to do what I've been doing already, competing against heeuuge horses. Wish I was 16 again!!!

Rubyredshoes,

I have just looked at the Performance Award section and as I am old & a bit dim could you explain it to me?

Does it mean the points are collected at BCPS events or throughout the year at non BCPS things...?

Sorry for being thick....I can't help it....

You get a Score card at the beginning of time period - think starts Sept or Oct and then you score points according to the activity you take part in. I used to get points for BD dressage, representing riding club and for show jumping at a recognised show centre. We also got points for showing. Think you get points for PC camp, hunting and sponsored rides.

You get the secretary at the show to sign your points card to verify your placing and then at the end of the season you send off your card and wait to see how you did compared to all the other connies taking part. You get a rosette according to how many points you score and then there are various trophies that can be won - like highest dressage points etc.

Where are you in Scotland? My 18 year old sister is still jumping her 13hh fell. If you look in the right places there's plenty about!

hi, im 22 on a 13.1 and do a bit of everything.

You can do unaff & affiliated dressage.

unaff show jumping - i have never seen any age restrictions ? i jump in pony classes if they are split but usually at small shows its just done by jump height, not horse height. but you jump lots bigger than me i only do 2ft6!

You cant jump trailblazers on a pony as an adult.
You can jump BSJA in the seniors if he's 14.2 i believe.

Showing - M&M's , WHP (again, at local show not split by age, but yes age matter at county) think you can M&M at county level any age rider? not too sure. Workers at local shows is very very rarely age restricted, i do WHP all the time.

What age is the pony? if over 15 you can get involved with veteran horse society showing/dressage. age of rider n/a.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

I am SW Scotland. Pony is 9yrs so not quite ready for veteran yet..!

Unfortunately local shows here are age restricted unless its M&M classes but I've had to pull his mane quite short due to rug rubbing over winter. Even SJ locally is age restricted (16 & under).

Have just received a schedule for a show next weekend, will enter M&M ridden, WHP & horse SJ class. I think I will have to pick shows/classes carefully & enquire about BCPS Performance thingy soon...

Thanks again....I didn't realise it would be so limiting here...maybe will have to move souf.....
