Adults on ponys - what great fun!

Had my first lesson today since neurotic TB has gone and rode a 14.2 tops dartmoor pony - after being a bit scared she could carry my fat backside it was fab! Havent ridden a pony for about 15 years but loved it, now i know why people choose to ride them over horses, such good fun and a damn site more comfy than a narrow tb!!! It was great to get my confidence up and concentrate on my riding for a change too.Self indulgent post but pleased to be back on after my gee gee who i didnt have enough time for went on loan a few weeks ago.
 
i rode my mates dales pony and spent a lot of time giggling and whooping about the school, then nearly fell off when the saddle started to slip round her pony belly!! never in a million years could i have giggled,whooped and generally hoolied about on my nervy TB- it was the best fun ever

Ahhh, sounds like it was just what you needed!

Have to say that I behave like a kid on my TB - guess I'm just lucky that he puts up with it....
 
Yep ponies are brilliant! I had so much fun riding Basil a little RS pony at my yard. Also LOVE riding Miffy (lydia's pony)

I have plans to start pony shopping next year. Something of about 13 hands that is confidence giving but not too wide. Can't wait!

I played at ponies today too. I don't know why but I felt like a big kid and decided to just bomb around the school and get those little pony legs moving along like pistons. When we go out hacking with friends on bigger horses I am sure drivers think that I am a child. They must get a suprise when they see me close up and realise that I am middle aged

When I was at college, rather then ride the ex-eventers and sjers, I used to demand riding Charlie - the typical nothing special riding school/ pony club pony, the speed with whizzed around the corners

I LOVE riding ponies - my new ponio is 14.2/14.3 and I also ride our other two ponios which are 14.2 and 13.2 - but more fun and easier for a shortie like me to ride than my husbands 16.2 which feels like a cross between an HGV and The Loss Ness Monster.

Actually the only thing which puts me off ponies is how short their trot stride is - you end up rising to the trot twice as much as on a horse

I'd need a ladder to get on anything bigger than an NF & I'd be like a pea on a drum if I sat on a Hunter or a TB type. And it feels like you're doing the splits

Leg ups aren't the answer either, not when the legger upper is so energetic you go flying off the other side & land in the dirt. While said legger upper pi$$es themselves laughing & pony throws you a look of despair

Well, I hope you are pleased with yourselves....your poor ponies will have endless back problems, bruised knees from your toes kicking them, and I'm sure your saddles need reflocking at least fortnightly.
But hey, why worry about these poor delicate ponies' welfare when you're selfishly having fun at their expense.

Ponies are cheap to feed, my two technically are horses, one is 153 cms (LHC) and the other a bit bigger but basically big ponies. I hate seeing adults on small ponies, thats what our proper cob breeds are for and I'd much rather one of those than a warmblood any day. As for the trot, Tarquin has the Welsh Cob trot which at speed is a bit jarring and I haven't tried to sit to an extended trot yet!

There is a way of putting things in a polite way! As long as a rider is the right height and weight for the equine it does not matter how old they are. Im 28years old and a ride a 14h1 pony! And I have never heard anyone inc instructors/judges say I am to big! You can get an adult that is to big/heavy for a horse etc which is wrong obviously. Which is not what this post is about anyway! Adults are able to ride ponies & do. Anyway back to the point, ponies are great and fun! I wouldn't swap mine for the world even after used to owning and competing Tb's and sports horses!!!!

I think it's up to the RSPCA, not you, to decide whether your animals are an appropriate height to cope with you as a rider - i.e. 14.2hh or above.
I hate seeing adults on ponies too...perhaps if you sold both of yours (and saved up a bit too) you'd be able to buy a decent sized horse that you won't be ashamed to ride?

However I saw an 18 yr old girl, about 5ft8 ish, she's stick thin and riding an 11hh Welsh at an affiliated show the other week!! I thought that wasn't on.

Can't have been comfortable for either of them! (They weren't placed thank goodness!)
