Hi, has anyones horse had an adverse reaction when micro chipped? The site where our pony has been chipped is really swollen and tender, she was chipped yesterday morning. Have spoken to vets tonight, she hasnt got a temperature but they have suggested that if its still swollen tomorrow she should have a course of antibiotics as a precaution. I was just wondering how common this is?

I've no personal experience, but went to see a horse for sale that had a small hard lump where he was chipped 2 years previously - by a very experienced reputable equine vet. Owner said "it has always looked like that".

Well, this is not a small lump!! I would say it is at least the size of a 10pence piece, probably half as big again, so I hope it doesn't stay like that!!

Uncommonly it is possible to get an abscess around the microchip if bacteria from the skin went in on the needle. Hopefully antibiotics should sort it out, worst case scenario the microchip will need to be removed.

Also a possibility it could be a haematoma if the needle hit a vessel on the way in - the needles are pretty mean!

Some animals are exceptionally sensitive and will react to the microchip but this is pretty rare.

If it doesn't go down I'd get your vet to check it.

Have had nine horses microchipped over the years, and apart from the last one being a bit offended, never had a problem. Probably a small haematoma which will re-absorb once the chip beds in to the muscle. Might be worth getting the antibiotics just as a precaution.

I have spoken to the vet this morning, she is coming out today to assess her as it is possible that she has developed an abcess and will need antibiotics.
Thanks for all your replies

My boy is a very sensitive soul. The entire side of his neck where he had the micri chip swelled and it took a few days to go down completly. I'd always say better safe than sorry and get some antibiotics though.
