Adverse reactions to Prascend?

Hi

My 19 year old mare has been diagnosed with cushings, no major symptoms although she has been quieter than is normal for her. She has been on prascend for 3 days and has now come out in spots all over her body - classic urticaria/hives. Nothing else management wise has changed but this doesn't appear to be a common side effect.

Has anyone else seen this as a reaction to the drugs? Also worrying about whether a cortisone injection is too much of a risk (suggested by vet) with the cushings?

Thanks all for any experiences/advice.

Ive heard of hives before. I think the general advice is to start with a teeny bit and gradually increase, so if your dose is one, start with a quarter for a week or two then increase slowly. You can use a pill cutter for this.

Do join the FB group Equine Cushings Disease where you’ll find lots of helpful info.

Thank you and for the information re the FB group - I will look at that now.

You're right to be concerned about giving a systemic steroid injection to an horse with currently uncontrolled Cushing's. The risk of laminitis would be much higher than in a healthy horse.
The advice above to taper in the Prascend from a quarter tablet upwards is spot on.
Can you bath the horse to help settle the spots down? Not the best time of year to do it, but it can help a lot with the discomfort.
