I am thinking of putting my name and website on my lorry for my business but someone told me it could affect my insurance / or there could be rules regarding this. The lorry is in my name and I am a sole trader and its an equine business.

Will call insurance company tomorrow but in the meantime has anyone heard of this?

I could be wrong but that sounds like bull!

I know if you are sponsored then you can't have the companys name on the sides of the lorry, so assume it would be the same?

Definitely check with your insurance company as there are rules about when it becomes commercial from advertising yourself on your box.

Its a mind field really, there is something about sponsorship and if ur paid by a sponsor and advertise them ur wagon you need an operators lisence but not sure about insurance or when its ur own business

As soon as you have advertising on the side of your lorry you can be seen to be using it for business & that opens a whole new can of worms. You will probably need an operators licence. If that is so you'll need to use the tachograph & conform to drivers hours etc. You will probably find that your insurance will go up significantly as well as you will need business use.

This caught out quite a few professional riders a few years ago when VOSA stopped numerous lorrys that were going into a venue. Before you do this speak to VOSA & check with them, they should be able to tell you what you need to do. If you don't check up on everything it could be extremely costly if you are stopped.

well........... this is awkward...... we have huge letters of 'UKIP' on the back of our lorry

not even our business :/ (also it has nothing to do with the ukip party!)

No you don't I'm afraid, I have a 7.5ton horsebox with my company name on it (we are in the motor trade) as long as it it just for your horses that you are ferrying around then to have your name on the side is fine and you don't need an "o" licence either

The operator license thing is true. VOSA can interpret the sign as evidence of it being commercial .The best thing to do is get an opinion from them in writing. Or better still ,dont put it there at all.

Is the lorry being used for the equine business at the moment ?

Is the lorry over 3.5 tonnes ?

I should have been a bit clearer on the business. I do sports massage therapy so the lorry has nothing to do with my business, I just thought having my details on the lorry would be a good form of advertising as we compete most weekends

The lorry is 6.5t and its only used for my horse and sometimes another from the yard if they need a lift so no money made from the lorry.

Will check with insurance tomorrow and Vosa and post an update.

Will be interested to hear the outcome. I have those magnet adverts on the doors of my lorry. Hubby is a handyman so n link and I only carry my own ponies. Never even thought about it to be honest .

I think you are laying yourself open to be stopped by VOSA for being comercial and the insurance being able to say its hire and reward which could give them an excuse to invalidate your insurance!!!!, Opperator's licences are quite difficult to get and as a result VOSA will take a dim view of people who they belive are breaking or bending the rules and running without one if its in conection with a bussiness ..

Spoke to VOSA today, I have to write to their head office in Leeds stating what I use the box for, what I intend writing on it and what the business is and they will decide if I can go ahead.

If they say yes then it will be good to have that in writing and keep the letter in the lorry.

If you have anything other than Horses written on the side of your lorry you will need an operators licence.

If it is your own business and just your horses you will need a restricted licence Orange Disc.

If you are carrying other peoples horses and have sponsorship and advertise your websites and just compete on mainland uk you will need a National Operators licence Blue Disc

If you are carrying other peoples horses etc and go abroad you will need an International Operators.

It is very simple and easy.
