My horse has fractured his splint bone in his hind leg, it's none displaced and should heal well hopefully, slight infection and cellulitis from the cut and the tendon still needs scanning but providing all is well he should heal well. He's currently on box rest with stable bandages on all legs, unsure as whether to remove the other 3 during the day or leave them on?

Any advice on the treatment and rehab of a splint fracture would be greatly appreciated as even though I am working very closely with the vet and rehab centre I want to give him the best chance at recovery :-)

Can't see why needs bandages on other three legs I'd take them off. My horse did his a few years ago it healed fine.

If you bandage one leg because of any injury, always bandage the opposite leg as well. The horse will compensate for the bad leg by putting all his weight on to the good one, so a bandage will offer some support.

I'd take the fronts off for the day and the other hind off for an hour or so a day just to let the lehs breath a bit.

Time is your greatest healer - just be patient and all will work out fine.

My horse did the same to her splint bone at the start of the year, she's had the whole summer off and is now back in work completely sound. The idea was to put her on box rest but she's not the easiest patient and the vet decided that she was just going to break her other 3 if she was left in - so she was reluctantly given turnout for the whole summer under constant supervision, was very nerve-wracking!!
Bandaging wise I'd agree with removing the fronts & leaving the hinds bandaged during the day.

I'm sure it will all heal nicely in time, the best thing to do is to take everything very steadily - especially when coming back into work. Let us know how it goes x
