Advice please about buying 19 year old horse having loaned for a few months. Only used for hacking and flatwork although very capable of jumping. Any recommendations for insurance? Thanks
Thanks very much.you need to think about what you need insurance for. would you put a 19 year old horse through colic surgery or other invasive treatment ? , personally i wouldnt. the insurers will charge a hefty premium for an older horse and it may be better to find out how much it would be and do a standing order for the same amount each month to go into a savings account which you only use for unexpected vet bills...i would also apply for a credit card if you havent already got one so you can pay any large bills straight away if you havent built up enough savings...i used NFU for my horse but it wasnt cheap even before she got old..
Or buy something like catastrophe cover. I stopped insuring mine over 15 as it got expensive and lots of things were no longer covered.Advice please about buying 19 year old horse having loaned for a few months. Sounds like a good plan. Thanks very muchIt is worth mentioning that petplan (might be others) will continue full cover until 25 if the horse is insured with them before the horse is 20. By complete fluke I had done that with mine and I think I kept him on full cover until 23 (he was still doing all activities at that point).
