As above, I have been wondering given the absurd price of diesel whether this is a realistic option?

I understand you need to be a little careful in colder weather, so would probably only do this during the summer which is when I have by far and away the most mileage. Also would probably only do a 50:50 mix with diesel (not sure why - think I read somewhere that was best....)

Can anyone enlighten me as to the pitfalls or benefits of my plan? I have ancient Leyland roadrunner so will not have any problems associated with invalidating guarantees or modern diesel engine.

You need to be very careful. If you use it you are supposed to pay fuel duty on it. :(
There is a HM Revenue & Customs circular on it if you search hard enough.

Before I knew that, I tried it in my 1988 Land Rover. like you about 50:50 mix. It went better than it did on pure diesel from the pump. Faster and better fuel consumption. You can't be discreet about it though, you smell like the chip shop as you drive along...

I think it's 2500 litres per year, you need to keep receipts to prove how much you are using. I've used it in the past in my car and saved loads! and I know someone who uses it in their lorry and saves lots too.

I would only go to 50% max and probably only 25% veg oil in winter.

How does this work. Do you literally pour veg oil, the type on supermarket shelves, straight into your fuel tank 50/50 with diesel.

Running our Disco on it at the moment, it's a bit sluggish at the moment in the colder weather but no problems when it warms up. Yes you literally pour it in the diesel filler, but you do need to regularly clean out the filters. We've also used heating oil in the past.
