My 8 year old rough collie has just come home from the vet. He was blind in both eyes anyway (detached retinas as a pup) and ran into a bramble in the garden, he damaged his eye so badly the only choice was to take it out. Has anyone had any experience of this operation?

He is on anti-biotics for the next 5 days and we have an appointment next Friday for his check up bit I was wondering if I could find out some more information before we see the vet! Thanks! :)

we had a jrt who had her eye removed due to glaucoma, the eye lids were stitched shut to stop anything getting in, all we had to do was keep it clean while it was healing (on vets advise), as it did weep a bit other than that i cant remember having to do anything special, she was fine after and managed just as well without it

My lovely Chaka had her eye removed when she was 10 due to a tumour. She coped amazingly well with the one eye after an initial period adjusting. As your collie is blind presumably the vision thing isn't going to be a problem. As to the socket, at first it looked quite normal as it was swollen, just looked her eye was shut, but as it healed the socket sunk in and at first it was a bit of a shock, but as the time went on I honestly didn't notice it. I was given an elizabethan collar when she came back from the vets but didn't use it as she was stressing and I felt it wasn't fair when she was already having to get used to just one eye. The wound healed really well as I recall (was over 4 years ago), and she didn't bother with it much. I did let her sleep in my bedroom so I was aware if she did paw at it but she was very good. Sadly the cancer did spread and I lost her a year later but do not regret having the op done. This pic was taken when it had all healed up.

Thanks so much for your input and stories. I was never given a buster collar by the vet, but he has been scratching his eye today. So far I have taped a sock onto the leg he is scratching with to hopefully stop him doing any damage as he can't negotiate the house properly with a buster collar on. Do you have any more ideas?
