Hi,

I was hoping for some tips on feeding a horse who has recently been ill. He has lost alot of weight lately and due illness and because of this i have not been able to ride this has caused muscle wastage. He is slowly starting to be ridden again but unfortunately he cannot do alot for the next while.

I have him on conditioning cubes, cool mix just because he enjoys it, iron supplement and vitamin supplement. He gets fed three times per day and he is turned out for five hours everyday. I also gave him a course of Horse first back to form to give him a boost I am trying my best right now but nothing is working for him. He has had his bloods run and the only thing was that he was low in iron which i have been correcting with the iron supplement.

Did you have the specific iron test done on his blood? Or did he just show as anemic? The UK pasture/forage is typically high in iron and true iron deficiency is rare.

What illness did he have?

We had a specific test done on his iron levels because he was unwell the vet recommended it. We have another one to do in a few weeks time to see how he is doing. He had sinusitis which was very hard on his system. He also has lymphangitis which is permanent for him but very manageable.

The only other thing I would recommend if you arent already doing it to feed a prebiotic like pink powder as it is cheap and palatable and it is amazing how much condition horses put on when put on it, helps them make best use of all the other expensive stuff!

Also you dont say what forage he is on but haylage (starting with lo cal hi fibre like blue horsehage and maybe gradually moving up to the green ryegrass conditioning one if he needs that) can also really help as forage makes up a lot of the diet.

have any of you tried think pink instead of naf pink powder? i have seen that people say they are similar with a cheaper price on the think pink. Although also seen that it made the horses a little more excitable and he can already be a handful at times.

thanks lornaA i checked that site there are so manyy things id like to get from there! i already ordered the pink powder before i seen your post. i'm so excited to see if this helps him. i'm also considering changing his feed to Pure Feed i was on the website and really like the sounds of it all. Does anyone have any feedback from Pure Feeds. I have to pay for delivery to N.I so would rather know if it was going to be worth it before i fork out.
