Poor Alfie has had the Op........ he seems perfectly happy except for the lamp shade.

Vet advised staying in with limited exercise.

Doggy friend advised normal walks, but on lead and a dip in the sea was an option.

The stitched area seemed to be quite red today (done on Tues) and I am not sure if this is due to over walking, the sea the fact that he may be trying to get around the collar to lick it or if this is normal.

Any advice would be good as vets are on emergency only now.

Thanks

Have you cleaned it with antiseptic in case he picks up an infection and by the way dogs who get the snip tend to put on more weight so you best watch his diet from now on

poor alfie i think your old doggy friend is a bit sadistic..ask any self respecting male after having his bits chopped if he would like a dip in the sea......very cold this time of year i would have thourght....may have got some sand it the wound or a bit of infection......

My JR was done about 4 years ago, but don't remember it going red (did look very bruised though). Think mine had to have week of lead walk, but as he doesn't do lead walk, I just didn't walk him. When stitches came out vet advised that he should be kept out of rabbit holes and brambles for another 10 days (no problem there as he doesn't do rabbits!!!). If area feels hot or starts swelling, I think I would get vet to check.

Lead walk is fine but the area must be kept meticulously clean. We used hibi scrub diluted and had no problems. If your dog is sensible and doesn't lick at the wound, remove the collar if it bothers him and you could try a pair of undies instead if he is more comfortable. We were told we could lead walk as much as we liked. The day after our boy was cut, he broke free (13 stone of muscle) and tore after a rabbit catching and killing it, lead and harness still on and no skin on my hand and was fine as the stitches didn't give way thankfully!!!!!

It will look a bit red and angry for a few days though the trip to the seaside was a bad idea. Clean the area down to prevent any further infection, ease off the exercise, keep warm and it should be fine. Be mindful though if it doesn't go down in the next couple of days as I'd be calling the vet for antibiotics -

SOMETIMES THE ACTUAL STITCHES CAN CAUSE A SLIGHT ALLERGIC REACTION AROUND THE OP SITE, JUST BATHE AND KEEP CLEAN!!!
HE WILL BE COVERED AS WOULD HAD HAD AN ANTIBIOTIC SHOT DURING OP!!!
VERY SENSIBLE DOG OWNER GETTING HIM THE SNIP!!!!
