Thanks for that. Very sensible advice. Our neighbours are having a bonfire party tonight, but they are very considerate and told us in good time. The dog has been on calmers for 4 days and seems very relaxed (the other is so deaf she'd sleep through the Last Trump). The cat will go under a bed, and the horses, all out at grass, think Christmas has come early, as they've been given a huge strip of new grass at the far end of the pasture which will keep them very happy all night.
We are next to a airfield and this year they are having their first firework show. Not impressed as we were never informed of it and I'm worried about how close it will be to the yard. Its only 1/2 mile away and from the size of the bonfire its going to be a big one
The one big bugbear I have about this otherwise great advice is that nowhere does it advise any animal owners to try and habituate animals to loud noises as a matter of course.
I think this is advisable because not very many people letting off fireworks will even think of informing pet / horse owners about their plans ... and even if they do they will probably not reach everyone and any notices put up might be missed by owners.
And as said on the site its not just bonfire night it can be weddings, diwali, birthdays, new year etc etc etc.
I think we owe it to our pets / horses to prepare them for this sort of thing so that they are NOT put through this stress ........ and we dont then have to stress if we have not sedated the animals cos we did not know about the event.
Its not as if its summat new, it happens every year and several times a year
Last year our neighbours let off some fireworks, other side of hedge about 5 metres away from their stables!! Wasn't warned about them and spoke to all the local horse owners who advised me people haven't had them in the village for years as it's such a horsey village!
I of course, on hearing them dashed outside! They weren't going too mad, just a couple of giraffes, snorting! I turned all the lights on, radio on and just sat there chatting away to them!! Eventually they went back to their hay! My partner was at work at the time and I had to take our newborn premature baby out with me!! I wasn't happy! I will be knocking on doors to see if anyone's having any this year and buying sedatives, just to take the edge off!!
