I have an ex racehorse on the yard, 16hh, 5 year, last raced last year but still pretty lean. Can anyone recommend a good make of saddle that is suited to the shape of these ex racehorses, am finding it impossible to fit something to him and wondered if any of you guys had any suggestions. Ideally want a gp/jump saddle as mainly hacking at the moment. Yes I am planning to get the saddler down but wanted some recommendations first.

I have an albion jump and a wintec isabell dressgae for my ex-racehorse. The albion especially is good, as the gullet gives him loads of space to move his back.

We have 5 yr old ex-racer who only finished racing 7 months ago and have found the wintec 2000 is a good fit whilst he is building up/changing shape. Plus its light on his back whilst he gets used to his new career!

My master saddler came out & fitted a Collegiate GP to my ex- racehorse with high withers. IT's got the Wintec Gullet system & I've changed these from narrow/med to med & back again a few times. Saddle cost £675.
Very pleased with it, but not really a jumping saddle, however I hunt in it.

I have a bates GP saddle, and a Saddle Company dressage saddle for my ex-racer. She has changed shape several times since I have had her but as they are adjustable, I just get them checked and refitted every so often. They are very different saddles (bates is like an arm chair, Saddle co is half synthetic) and they are both very light. Hope that helps!

Not quite an ex - racehorse but a slender TB bred for racing - I have a bates GP and check it every month or so (I use the gullet measurer and change the gullet but get the saddler out if still not happy with the fit), the wintec and collegiate are also made by the same company and are pretty much the same style.

I found the Thoroughgood T4 a brill saddle fab. I sold it when he moved on then bought another ex-racer who came with his own saddle and totally regret selling my other one

oh i know what you mean i had a nightmare getting one to fit. he came with a wintec but was very stiff under saddle. so had one fitted wen i saved up enough and he now has a GFS gp/jump. i had to have loads of flocking doing to it as it was pressing down on his rib cage to much and needed lifting off. they are very difficult to fit but you are going to the right root getting a saddler as its near impossible to get one to fit perfect without flocking in areas. in my experience anyway lol. my GFS is fab as i got the cut of head at the back for jumping and moveable knee block to suit what im doing. but it cost £995 but worth every penny.
