Advice/help for my aging blind dog

I have a 9 year old Chocolate Labrador who over the last few years has become completely blind. We have had her seen by vets and there is one treatment available for her however the vets are refusing to operate on her as last year she had a small operation to remove fatty lumps and she reacted very badly to the anaesthetic and was not herself for months after the op.

The treatment they are offering would mean that she would be able to see again however she would have to wear contacts that would have to be changed twice a day and have eye drops everyday therefore both me and vets don’t think the benefits quite out way the bad points.

As well as her blindness she also has arthritis which does sometimes affect her very badly but sometimes not so much. Like any old dog with problems she has good days and bad days but it is getting to the point where there are now more bad days than good.

She still goes on two small walks a day but she is always very reluctant on the way home and a five minute walk home takes about 30! We have tried giving her longer walks to see if she wants to go further but she just gets too tired! The only reason we still take her out is because she does ask to (sits by the front door) and we think it is important to keep her exercising and as much weight off of her due to her arthritis.

The vet has also warned us that she may be likely to develop dementia in the next few years and to try and keep major changes to an absolute minimum. Next year I am meant to be going to university and although she lives with my family she is my dog and doesn’t really respond to anyone else but me. The vet said that it might be an idea to put her to sleep before then otherwise she will grieve and suffer.

I don’t want to be one of them owners that old on to a dog for selfish reasons not seeing how much pain/discomfort they are in etc. So I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on whether any of you think it’s time to let her go or to keep hold of her until something happens that gives me no other option?

Any advice will be appreciated!

I can sympathise as I had a dog who gradually lost her sight. She coped alright for a while but struggled when it deteriorated further and that was when I made the decision to put to sleep. Like your dog she was very dependent on me, so much so that I didn't go on holiday for the last couple of years of her life as I knew it would stress her too much.
If your girl is getting to the point where there are more bad days than good with her arthritis, coupled with the fact that she may struggle to cope without you, I think it maybe would be kinder to let her go sooner rather than later.
It will be a year next week since my old lady was pts, she could have gone on longer I am sure, but she wasn't enjoying life much and to keep her going would have been purely for myself. We all miss her very much, but I don't regret making the decision to have her pts.

It's always a hard decision to make, and as you know your dog the best a decison only you can make. We had an old lab x who had lost an eye as a pup, and when the sight went in the other eye we called it a day, he was healthy in every other way but he was miserable as he lived for walks and retrieving things and as he was a farm dog he had free rein over the whole farm, which obviously he couldn't do as a blind dog as he kept walking into the horses or other animals, so it just wasn't fair TBH - he was 10. But I don't regret having him pts as it was far better than just having him existing in this little dark limbo, we could have had surgery but the success rates are awful and very few dogs are any better after it and often can only see light and dark or very blurry shapes at best not to mention the op risks, so not an option at all, contact lenses for a dog especially and active one is just not really feasable IMO!
I've lost 2 dogs over the last 6 months both elderly and it was a hard call to make, the last we thought we'd give him the summer but he got worse so we had him pts a few weeks ago, and I've got this decision again with my 16yr JRT, my grandpa left her to us when he died 5yrs ago, and she's lost the plot these last few months and her eyesight is pretty poor, she still pootles about the farm in her own little world after mice and other gross things to eat!, so we're umming and erring as to wether we call it a day at the end of summer - it never gets any easier no matter how many pets you've had pts but it's what is best for them at the end of the day.

As soon as I posted this she has been fine and happy to go out on walks...as if she knows! I'm sure it is just a phase as she often has them and she will go back to looking very old and sorry for herself soon!
It really is such a tough decision as I don't want to put her to sleep when she still has life left in her! I too may wait till the end of summer so I can spend lots of time with her and she can be pts before I leave for uni
