Hi all
Thanks for the vibes for seren, she has in infection of the womb, so with treatment should be absolutely fine.

I fairly urgently need some feed advice and know NL is not quite the place, but lots more people come in here.

I will be going to feed merchants tomorrow so would be great to get some advice asap if you dont mind.
Seren has lost condition, grass is a no no due to the rotated pedal bone, her high fibre diet of hay, happy hoof, high fibre cubes is not giving enough of a laxative effect on her the vet said.
So could any one please advise what i could feed for a laminitic, who needs some condition, something with a more laxative effect. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks in advance

How is she with speedibeet? Inca has a jugful of that with her Happy Hoof. The other thing I would try is a bran mash with Epsom Salts - or even just a handful of Epsom Salts in with her feed for a week or so. In the winter mine both get bran mash (hot) on a sunday night!!

I was going to say speedibeet and Epsom Salts (great minds think alike and all that!!!)

i'd feed alfa oil, its got the energy of a conditioning mix without the high starch and has the slow release energy which wont cause any over exuberance either! alfalfa has much more of the laxative effect than bran too!! you could contact baileys or dengie as they seem to be good at giving out advice

bran mash will act as a laxative but won't help with her condition.Speedibeet is suitable for laminitics so you should be ok with that.

ask the vet if he would recommend anything?

I did ask him over the phone but he could not say without seeing her, because i had a different vet look at her as there happened to be one at the yard, all part of the same big chain, but not my usual.
Then rang usual vet as i find him excellent plus he knows seren, he said they will see her tomorrow, problem is the feed merchants will be closed by the time the vet has done the flushing, but i will certainly be asking then for some advice too

I assume you just need the laxative effect as a short term measure? Inca went pottery this year when she didn't have enough fibre going through her - was back to normal withing 24 hours - although was kept in for 72 to make sure she was stabilised - its such a difficult balance when they are lami's isn't it?

I would go for the bran mash with Epsom Salts and then stick to the Happy Hoof etc wit some speedibeet - if necessary just up the amounts slightly to keep enough fibre in her. Also if you add salt (Epsom or normal) to her feed you will encourage her to drink more which will help her gut movement too. Inca has a large rock salt block in her field which she licks all the time - is on her 3rd this summer whereas my boy hasn't even had half of his first one!!

I would recommend the Speedibeet as it can be fed very moist which will in itself help with the constipation.

Thanks so much everyone else too donklet, buffy and all fo you, thanks, this has made me feel better, and i feel more well equipped to march down to the feed merchants tomorrow now too

Slobber mash is fantastic for weight gain but i dont know if its ok for lamanitics, u can feed it hot or cold and soaks in 5 minutes, add as an extra or just on its own nd works just as well,

Hot bran mash with a handful of Epsom salts & scoop of spedibeet & good luck X
