Advice needed - any experience of joint fusion?

Hi All,
Briefly, my 7 year old cob has been diagnosed with arthritis in the pastern joint. A cortisone injection has had little effect. Vet now says the choices seem to be surgical joint fusion or field ornament. Has anybody any experience of joint fusion or any advice, please?
