Advice needed desperately, do i take job or stick to my degree??

Hi

I really need some advice, I've currently just finished my first year of a 2 year foundation degree, but am not really enjoying it and was only doing it to get myself a degree to fall back on.
The thing is i have now been offered a position as a working pupil about 15 mins from home at a showjumping yard where i will get to ride and do by NVQs up to level 3. Also working hours are 8 - 5pm 5 days a week, so the hours are good, pay is low to begin with but as i pass my exams she will increase it, and i will get to stay living at home so no living costs. I could also study my degree by distance learning if i needed to.
And just wanted peoples opinions, on whether i should take this opportunity as could finish my degree later, or finish my degree now and hope i find another position like this later.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
 
What do you want to do once you have your NVQ's? Being a groom isn't all that much fun after the first couple of years and even if she does increase your money it's never going to be much as a groom.

Unless you have a clear idea of what path you want to follow and have some realistic goals and a plan of how to reach them, I'd stick with your degree. If you finish it and still want to be a WP there are loads of opportunities.

Take the job and finish the degree by distance learning.

Thats what I would do if I were you anyway. I was always into horses when I was young, but dissuaded from working with them by my parents, they didn't really think it was such a great career. I now have a well paid job and I do have my own horses, but I think if I had my time again ( god, i sound ancient, i'm 38) i would have tried to make a career out of working with horses...plus I think there are more opportunities than there was when I was younger.

Go for it, you may never have this chance again (but don't hold me responsible if it goes t*** up!)
 
I am all for education as it will always stand you in good stead for the futurer.....however...... if the offer you have just been given at the yard is a genuine one AND you will have the opportunity to get qualifications & good experience as well then I would be tempted to go & do that. As you say you can always return to your degree course later if you wish.

Make sure that the yard offer is genuine & there are prospects to get the qualifications because so many yards make offers to people just to go on to use then applicant as slave labour

Go and speak to your Uni tutors if you have successfully completed your first year you may be able to defer next year and spend a year seeing how this job goes.
If you are prepared to work hard you will always find a WP job but maybe not one in such a convenient location.
I think you need to decide if you want to work with horses or work so you can have horses.
After a WP stint I choose the later and have gone into teaching, which is an excellent compromise of a stimulating job I love that provides me with enough money and time off to have my horses.
I would say working on a yard is a worthwhile experience either way but you can learn a lot out of doing it over the summer while you have those nice long Uni holidays!
 
I would like to work with horses no matter what i decide to do, was thinking of maybe RI as well, but this job would give me a lot of experience, especially since i woul dlike to do some competing in show jumping myself with my own horse. But have thought about teaching as well as the pay is ok and would give me time to compete my own horse, but the hours of this position are not really bad.

I think if you can continue doing your degree by distance learning then you can combine the two.

Dont let your degree slip - otherwise its 2 years wasted!
 
TAKE THE JOB!!! Definitely!

You can always go back to the degree or do distance learning like you say. But this job might not come round again.

I would grab the opportunity with both hands. I did a degree and it was the worst 4 years of my life. The job I do now I could have done without it so I feel all I got from uni was going through hell and a big load of debt!

Take the job and enjoy life!! Best of luck
