Hello all!

So, the new hoss arrived on Friday, and has settled in really well. He's 4 years old and 15.1-15.2hh and is so far great! Before the place I bought him from, he was in Ireland. He's very well mannered, not bolshy or aggressive, leads well, moves back when asked, doesn't push, shove, bite, kick or anything nasty and is very affectionate and even waits for the haynet to be tied before he shoves his nose in! He had a few issues picking up his front feet at first as he wasn't used to it but after practice and praise he's been progressing well and now does it with no hesitation. Just one problem: He doesn't move his bum round! I like to take him out of the stable when I muck out and groom just because it's a nice change and he's not being turned out yet as he needs to be there for a few more days before the yard will let me, to ensure he's settled and familiarised. But it's a nightmare when I come with a wheelbarrow to come and muck out or if people want to get by! I don't think he's ever been taught it before, and he looks a bit puzzled when I press on his quarters to move. He just does not move round!! If anyone could please offer some advice, that would be great. He's fine being ridden and moves off the leg nicely, and is very mature and well schooled for a 4 year old, but moving his bum round seems to baffle him :D

So sorry for the essay, I know I'm waffling :o if anyone could offer some advice and exercises I could do with him, it would be greatly appreciated. Lemonade and cake for all those who got through! :D xx

if he moves off your leg when your riding him, then as you press your leg on and he moves over say over. then get someone to push at his hindquaters saying over.
you could also push his dock to one side and they normaally step over then. do the the same thing with saying over and the hindquaters after.

thats how i taught my youngster anyway

Haha will try that out then! Lots of practice is needed to drill it into him, hopefully he'll pick it up soon :) He's very willing to learn, just at the moment is baffled by anything new! He doesn't know what polos are, which I no bad thing I suppose! Annoying because he's so well mannered with other things, just doesn't understand that he's in the way :p xx
