Hi all,

I need some advice and decided that this was the best place!

I'm having a livery dilema!! My boy is at a yard at the moment where I get on really well with all the people but the hacking isn't all that and the fields get VERY muddy in the winter.
I have just been to look at another yard - its small again (which I prefer) and has hacking directly onto the common (no road work) and a larger stable for my big boy but it's £200 per month more expensive.

As a bit of background, my boy loves his hacking but we do some dressage. He's not the easiest horse to handle so i'm fairly careful about where I put him on livery.

What would you do in my shoes?!!

£200 is lot extra to pay per month but if hacking means that much to you and you can afford it then give it a try. The hacking where I am isn't brilliant so we don't hack out much but my girl is happy and she's there 24/7 and there are always plus and minus points with any yard. Decisions decisions

I have similiar dilemma.YO has just decreased the size of my two fields. My tb wont cope on smaller fields during the winter months and the grazing will be limited during the summer.I tried to explain and he went off on one.Like you I have alot of friends on yard so does my daughter but I will have to move for grazing fortunately its only across the road.I have the offer of bigger yard £10 per week more with better facilities and post and rail.We have barbed wire so I I have paid for electric posts all the way round post and rail will be much better.I think we both have a major decision really difficult isnt it.Friends or facilities?????????

I'd say stay where you are, as you and your horse are clearly settled. And use the £200 a month you would have to spend if you moved to the other place hiring a school or boxing up to the common to ride out. You'll be able to do all of that and still end up not spending that huge additional amount a month.

how much more ?!?!? i only pay £140 a month for full livery.
as ISH_Mad says use the money you save towards buying a trailer if you dont have one, or petrol if you do and box him to the common. xx

Thanks for all your replys - The price of livery here is atronomical!!! The yard that i'm at is £300 per month for 5 day part livery but I buy my own feed. The new one is £500 for 7 day part livery all inc. The benefits are no-roadwork and extensive bridleway access, larger stable and better grazing. I just don't know if I can justify £500 a month for that!!! I can't work out if it's my heart telling me to stay or my head!!!

Yikes......

If it were me I would save the extra £200...... as I have found that my bank balance always suffers when my heart starts talking

If off-road riding is worth almost £50 a week to you and you can afford it, you should go.

Having a non-tractor proof horse myself, if I could afford that and miss out on the little bit of road work I HAVE to do to get to the bridlepaths, then I would - I would probably ride a LOT more as well.

However, if your horse is ok in traffic and he manages with the grazing he's on without you needing to supplement his food because of it then stay.

Also - friends mean a lot.
